Price Projection: What will become an expensive icon?

Post by Bick »

I found the price recollection thread interesting, although I wasn't able to comment, not having bought any decent wine back in the day (I'm old enough, but spent my younger days drinking beer, which doesn't seem to have gone up much!).

It got me wondering, has the world of wine pricing already gone nuts with little room left for more lunacy, or are there any other wines out there (future icons) that are currently relatively cheap but in time may become ridiculously expensive like Grange or HoG? I suspect there wont be any quite like that, and its probably very hard to predict, but what do you think?

I think there may be the possibility of this happening with some kiwi wines in a more modest way. As they get more international notoriety, some may start to command much higher prices. Puriri Hills could become a sought after icon perhaps and at least double in price over the next 3-4 years I'd say. Otherwise, I think producers try to market their best wines as iconic before they actually are, 'validating' the wines quality with a high price to start with. But I'd be interested to hear other views.
Cheers,
Mike

Aged Hunter Valley Semillon. It's so obvious ... well it should be. To be honest VAT 1 is probably Australia's greatest white wine.

Which of the Puriri Hills do you suggest trying? I find that a little shop near me has almost all of their wines that are available here in the States.

I was going to ask exactly this question last week (just once, though) but thought I'd leave it to someone with more credibility...

Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier is the obvious call isn't it? I know $75 is hardly $3 Grange or whatever it was but then we aren't going to see the explosion of the Australian wine business from next to nothing again are we?

Otherwise perhaps we ought to be looking for the next long-term trend, so Hunter Semillon is a good thought (ie not a red!) What about some of the great fortifieds?

I hadn't thought of that. :?

In which case, scratch that question, and answer this one - what wines do you think are ok, but if only they were a bit cheaper you'ld buy them by the truckload?

8) Marketing as icon before they actually are.
Yep. Happens all over the place.
Morris's are releasing some "Icon" reds.
Now I like Moriss's.
Are the icon?
Well the fortifieds are, but the reds?
Nope. Iconic status comes from the hard yards over years and years, and its the punter shelling out his hard earned that makes the decision.
Not someone with a bright and shiny new idea in the marketing division.

Obviously some problems with the board today, of course my post should have read "greatLY OVERPRICED fortifieds"
