Good Wine Shops in New York City

Post by mkcoleman »

I am popping over to NYC for work in a couple of weeks and meeting up with some friends. They like wine, but have no clue as to where to buy wine, they would be looking at 6-12 bottles.

Can anyone shed any light on good wine shops, which have competitive prices

Cheers

I was visiting my sister there last July and went out looking for Australian and NZ wines, in particular. The best shop I found was Astor Wines and Spirits 399 Lafayette St, which is way downtown in Manhattan. They had a reasonable selection at very good prices - well, they seemed very good back in July when the Aussie dollar was at it's peak. I do recall picking up a bottle of Ata Rangi pinot for $US35.

I didn't do a lot of hunting, so I'm sure there are others.

New York City can be expensive as far as US prices go, but cheap compared to Oz. The various LVMH champagnes are generally well priced in the city.

Astor is ok, so is Acker on the UWS. Sherry Lehman on Park Ave and Park Avenue Cellars (funnily enough on Madison Ave) have some good stuff, but are somewhat exxy.

My advice is check eBob - there are tons of threads on this subject, or use Wine Searcher Pro for the wines you're interested in. In the US, WS Pro will search by state if you like.
