2008 Australian Riesling

Reading some recent comments on this forum it seems that 2008 may throw out some very good Rieslings.

Is the vintage likely to produce long lived wines or are they shorter term prospects as a very general rule?

Has anybody tasted any Great Southern 2008 Rieslings? Impressions...

Tried the Howard Park and was very good. Mind you the 06 and 07 were very good as well. 08 in SA is looking very good but variable for me so you need to pick and choose. The good ones however look classic and should age very well.

I will be buying up on 08 rieslings. The Pewsey Vale 08 is worth a look (case buy for me). I also liked the 08 Petaluma, and a bunch of Canberra District 08 rieslings are shaping up well.

I will be buying up on 08 rieslings. The Pewsey Vale 08 is worth a look (case buy for me). I also liked the 08 Petaluma, and a bunch of Canberra District 08 rieslings are shaping up well.

Likewise. A case is already in the cellar, and one in the fridge.

I'll be looking at Howard Park as well, given the strength of the past two vintages.

Word is there have been some crackers and some duds. Depends whether grapes were picked before or after the heat wave as up to then growing conditions were ideal for riesling.
Apparently this is first year for long time two Leo Buring Leonays have been made, one from Eden Valley and one from Clare, so that must say something.

Not yet but going for a tour down there in early January. Hopefully to Eden Valley and Barossa in mid-Jan too.

I agree with these comments in regard to SA - it's variable and definitely a try-before-you-buy vintage for me. A lot are making a big deal about picking before the heat in 2008, but I also suspect some wines may have been effected during the extended ferments if their refrigeration wasn't up to scratch - the appearance of new flagship rieslings are effecting some of the standard labels too.
