Some TNs - Goodbye to SOHO offline

Post by John #11 »

Thanks to Ian for organising this wonderful night.
Great company, great food and some lovely wines.

Champagne Grouping

1995 Krug
This wine easily won this grouping :)
It was initially quite stinky, with sulphur, and smokiness, and quite closed, but after 10 minutes in the glass, it really opened rapidly and was all at once magnificent and impressive, with yeasty, biscuity flavours, lemon, apples, apricots and roasted nuts (beautiful aged chardonnay dominates). Very long length. A perfect start to the night. I'm pretty sure I would drink this again in the future. WWOTN candidate.

Chardonnay Grouping

1998 Yattarna Chardonnay
Corked. (mea culpa)

2003 Stefano Lubiano "Collina" Chardonnay
An interesting contrast to the other chardonnays in this group, tight, minerally, flinty, very dry, and very crisp fruited. Lacked a little structure and length, but very drinkable, and went well with the 2nd course. Nice.

2003 Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay (courtesy of Gavin)
Very minerally, with some sulphur, river stones, but the lovely yellow fruit is dominant (pears, apples, lemons, melon and grapefruit), with a firm, crisp acidic spine, and some fine spicey oak. Long finish with more than enough creme. World class. WWOTN candidate.

2004 Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay (magnum)
I was surprised at the not-so-subtle differences from the 2003 (above). This was served very cold, and needed time to warm up before it sang.
Much more rounded and softer, lots more acidity, and lots more smokey oak, the fruit consists of gooseberries, pears, and peaches this time, lovely long finish. Fabulous.
WWOTN candidate.

Pinot Grouping

1999 Domaine Bruno Clair Gevrey Chambertin "Cazetiers" 1er Cru
Didn't know what to make of this wine. It seemed very closed, and lacked fruit, and mouth feel. Possibly faulty? Adrian assured me this bottle was very out of character.

2002 Bouchard Pere et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Vigne de L'enfant Jesus
Smokey and meaty, but very closed nose, and difficult to work this one out. Very subdued, almost austere palate, with red and black cherries, strawberries, dominant oak and acid. For a while I thought this might be faulty, but I now wonder whether it is just suffering from bottle shock. I would very much like to try this again, under different circumstances.

2004 Kooyong Estate Pinot Chardonnay
A good, honest, unpretentious Aussie Pinot, generous fruit, crisp acidity, some nice spicy oak, medium length finish. OK

2005 Domaine Noel Ramonet Chassagne Montrachet "boudriotte" 1er Cru Rouge
Very fruity, almost "New World" nose, medium bodied, red and black cherries, spicy oak, and plentiful acid. It lacks a little in structure and balance, may improve with more cellaring

Shiraz grouping
Shiraz is clearly alive and well in Australia!

1999 Kays Block 6 Shiraz
A lovely nose of tar, petroleum and plum. Lovely sweet core, with a little mint. Still has many years ahead of it. Contender for RWOTN

2001 Mt Edelstone Shiraz
Heady violets, smoke, and liquorice. Sweet syrupy core, lovely red and black fruit, beautiful definition, drinking very well right now.

2004 Best's Thomson Family Shiraz
Dense and very dark, powerful black fruited nose, a meaty and leathery palate, long nutty and savoury finish. Just sensational. RWOTN contender.

2006 Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier
Heavy floral (apricots) nose, medium-bodied, but very tight and closed, with palate showing very dry and subdued red and black fruit, abbreviated and disappointing finish. Very smooth but needs lots of time to blossom.

Cabernet (Blend) Grouping

1973 Redman Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon
Thanks to scanlon for bringing this along.
The bottle very much looked 35 years old, but the contents were in good condition.
Very smooth and savoury, a little chamois, still a little classy oak, and more than enough bright fruit and acid. Easily able to hold its head up high against the younger cabernets, I will remember this wine for years to come.

1992 Wynns John Riddoch Coonawarra Cabernet (magnum)
Beautiful Coonawarra Cabernet, powerful, dense, liquorice, tar, chalky tannins, boundless black fruit, and a finish that goes on into next month.

1993 Thomas Hardy Coonawarra Cabernet
Unmistakable Coonawarra aromas of capsicum, tobacco leaf, cassis and small black berries, but the palate was a little thin, and I thought disappointing in this class, but just enough interest to keep me coming back for a little more (hoping for some improvement). Outclassed here.

1996 Penfolds Bin 389
A good bottle, and really still a little youthful. The cabernet seems to dominate, the tannins already well integrated, the fruit is well defined, and the finish is very long. No disappointments here. Contender for RWOTN.

2002 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon
Very, very young, in need of a long decant, remained very tight and closed through the evening. Chunky tannins, loads of cedary and vanilla oak, red and black fruit(dark cherries, plums, mulberries, and blackberries), and lots of acid. Great potential, but just barely drinkable on the night.

I left a few wines out, I'm sure Ian will cover these.
Cheers.
John.

Wow

Small world.

Agree re the 2003 Art Series Chardonnay, it was and is world class and showed fantastically on the night!

In my part of Soho we also had 1992 Wynns John Riddoch, and it shone there too! My RWOTN in some pretty handy company, great mature Cabernet.

The 2004 Bests, we did not have but I really love and rate this wine, it is, along with the 2001, in my cellar and looking forward to it resting there until its ready!
regards

I'm pretty sure the 1992 JR we tasted was the bottle borrowed from your group.

I quite like the 1993 thomas hardy. If you keep the vintage in mind it is a great 'claret' style.

Thanks for the notes. Sounded like a great night! Have to admit to being keen to hear about the VP though :)

cheers

Great notes John. Thank you.

The L'enfant Jesus sounds like it could be very interesting...

It had been in a decanter for 7 hours before poured back in the bottle. I'm not sure more decanting time would have helped this wine.

Great notes by the way. It was a very nice evening with some excellent wines, food and company. I'll poste some of my notes soon. And yes, thanks to Ian for organising this last SOHO offline!

Btw, I see I missed out on the John Riddoch magnum from the Gavin & Mark group. Bugger! Luckily I got a sip of the 1990 Wendouree Shiraz Magnum (which was what I would call muted or closed compared to the other shirazes).

cheers,

I missed a few wines, thought I might fill in some gaps....

Still waiting for the thoughts of others....

Richmond Grove 2003 Limited Release Watervale Riesling
This was lovely. Such a young riesling, but already showing some aged chracteristics of toast, honey, as well as orange blossom, rose petal and luscious citrussy acid, and a generous dose of kero, or petroleum. Very dry, lemon and lime dominant, and a hugely long finish. to quote someone good "Awesome-o"

2006 Torbreck Viognier
Close your eyes, add a little sweetness, and you have a new sticky.
However, this was quite dry, and lacked sweetness, and was full of primary apricotness, and secondary lavender. A quite nice drink, but not my style. It <<did>> have some residual sugar.

1991 Fattoria Zerbina Pietramora Riserva Sangiovese
Lovely wine scanlon. Thx.
This was very smooth, and sanguine. I only had a small taste, and it was all gone too quickly. I want more. Lots more.

Foggo Black Myriah NV - Sparkling Shiraz
A simple sparkler, nothing memorable. :)

2002 Chateau Lamothe Guignard Sauternes
A lovely orange hue, oozing apricots, mandarins, choco-oranges, and Turkish delight. Not cloying at all, but ?just a little too sugary. Sue liked this quite a lot.

1994 Quinto do Noval VP
I just had a sip, I can't rate this.

1999 Yalumba Signature
This is one I missed, sadly.

Sorry you missed out on this one John - the magnum did the rounds of the table and there was about a third left, so I sent it next door. None of it came back!

Things have been so hectic for me the last week it hasn't been funny, but I should finally have some notes up tonight or tomorrow.

Cheers,
Ian

OK, if I must

Glorious nose of mixed fruits, raisins, chocolate pudding, and caramel.
I thought it was a little closed, but it blossomed in the glass within 5 minutes.
Dense, and impenetrable, with a liquid velvet palate of raisins, figs, lots of vanilla, chocolate, surprisingly only medium-bodied, and just a little sweetness. Silky smooth tannins. Superb and very long finish. Touriga is such a great grape in good hands. <IMO> Nothing in Australia even comes close to this.

Thanks :)

Was curious how approachable it would be. Sounds like it will drink well through out its life!

It's taken a while, but finally my impressions:

The evening (rather fittingly) went very smoothly, and I couldn't have imagined a better farewell - I'd like to thank everyone who attended, and also the mob next door who popped in and shared some of their own fine wines. Finally I wish Bradley & Peta all the best, and hope we catch up with them again soon at one of the future offlines.

1995 Krug, Champagne: Medium straw colour with a good mousse and many fine beads. Complex nose of brioche and honey; an explosion of lime/citrus and honey on the palate, a great balance of acid and fruit and a steely, excellent finish.

2003 Richmond Grove Riesling (screwcap): Bright straw/green. Lovely nose of developed petroleum/nutty characters matched with brown limes; the palate also has the same lime and petroleum characters on entry followed by a creamy/mineraly mid-palate, finishing slatey/nutty. A little in between phases, but definitely none the worse for it.

2006 Torbreck Viognier: Medium straw. Overly sweet, lifted bouquet full of strange model airplane glue and sugary/biscuity characters; the palate's oily and sweet with more glue/apricot syrup characters, the finish rather nasty with razor tannins and alcohol heat. One of only a couple of wines tonight that went into the spittoon and not down the gullet.

2003 Stefano Lubiano "Collina" Chardonnay: Medium straw. Heavy wool carpet and burnt match characters with steely fruit, not unlike Piper's Brook; the palate's sweeter with lashings of nutty oak and malolactic characters, not big on fruit but not exactly elegant either, the finish dry and steely. Dunno about this one, a lot of work has gone into it but it isn't that impressive; maybe it's just in a hole at this moment of time.

2004 Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay (magnum): Bright straw/green. Glorious, exotic nose that I thought was just as impressive as the '05, a burst of bubblegum followed by mineral/sweet limes and blossom/lychees. The palate's just as impressive, with lots of melon fruit, creamy malo and oak characters all perfectly balanced, finishing long and nutty/mineraly. Clear WWOTN for me, although the tiny grade 2 cork was a disturbing surprise.

1998 Penfolds Yattarna Chardonnay: Corked.

2003 Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay: A generous contribution from the mob next door (thanks Gavin). Bright straw. Looked a lot older than the '04, but then that was a magnum format too; it's nutty and peachy with a lot of work, the toasted/sweet oak looking a lot more obvious and less integrated. Good wine in its own right, but well in the shadow of its younger sibling in the big bottle.

2005 Ramonet 1er Cru Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge, Clos de la Boudriotte: Clear, blood red. Impressive, complex nose form the beginning with sweet, sugar covered beetroot, then tobacco, a little green stalks and creamy/nutty oak, turning riper with a little raisin characters out of the blue. I also thought the palate was the most impressive of the flight, with sweet cherry jam and herbs leading to a mineraly mid-palate, finishing with fresh berries and a hint of blue metal.

1999 Domaine Bruno Clair 1er cru Gevrey-Chambertin, Les Cazetiers: Light to medium red with a hint of brick. Funky/stinky nose with a little barnyard/forest floor at first, then wool carpet, and game/animal hide; the palate's more attractive with earthy cherry fruit that builds to a punch mid-palate, finishing tingly. An interesting savoury contrast to the previous wine.

2002 Bouchard Pere et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Graves, Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus: Very bright red. The nose was pretty closed up, only letting out brief whiffs of smoky/meaty characters; the equally smoky/meaty mid-palate packs a powerful punch, but it's all structure and on the austere side. I should add that all of the Pinots were opened on the spot, and while they all really could have used some breathing I got the feeling this was the harshest done by and had a lot of potential.

2004 Kooyong Estate Pinot Noir: Clear, blood red. Fresh/clean nose with stalks, scrubbed flesh and cherries/some detergent suds; ripe palate with cherry jam/nougat oak at first, then pepper and stalks, finishing cleanly with lots of sweet nougat oak. Very clean, solid Australian style Pinot, but I thought it looked a little clumsy against the Burgundies.

2002 Henschke Johann's Garden Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre: Very dark, blood red. Lovely, fleshy wine full of tomato concentrate ala Leggos, and black liquorice, its freshness and approachability amazing considering it's already six years old. I wish I didn't drink all of mine so quickly, because this is still drinking so well and has oodles of potential.

1991 Fattoria Zerbina Pietramora Riserva Sangiovese di Romagna: Minty and meaty/savoury nose compared to the Henschke, more than a little earthy and a little stinky too; the palate's just as funky/gamey, on the dry side with beagle-odour and some aniseed/cough drops. Not bad, but it did look a little dirty, lightweight and old-fashioned next to the Henschke.

2006 Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier: Medium red/purple. Sweet, concentrated blackberries with a hint of lift/florals and chocolate at first, but with breathing apricots come to the fore; the medium-weight palate opens with clean, sweet berries, but again it's overtaken by apricot characters with breathing. One of the better SV blends featuring a very good structure where the Viognier harsh tannins don't stick out on the finish, yet there's still way too much apricot for my liking.

1999 Kay Brothers Amery Block 6 Shiraz: Dark red with an orange rim. Exotic nose with smoky bacon, tomato and lifted mint, not unlike the '03 Tim Adams Aberfeldy a few months ago; the palate's just as impressive and exotic, smoky with truffle/sous bois and milk chocolate, and a velvety long finish with star anise. Drinking beautifully now, and one of my favourites of the evening.

2004 Best's Thomson Family Shiraz: Glass clinging, dark to inky red/purple. Huge nose of inky, sweet blueberries/blackberries matched with very creamy vanilla oak; the palate's just as immature and meshing but very impressive, full of the same blueberries and blackberries with some black olive and pepper, finishing with a little heat and a minty aftertaste.

2001 Henschke Mount Edelstone Shiraz: Dark to inky crimson. Complex, velvety nose of sweet raspberries and a hint of truffle/earth, then camphor and liquorice; there's liquorice on the entry of the palate, followed by wonderful baked berry-tart fruit, finishing minty/peppery, long and soft. Many similarities to the Best's but just a little better balanced, classier and refined; I get the feeling given enough time the Best's will lose its rough edges and become something like this.

1973 Redman Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon: Still a solid, dark red colour. There's still fresh raspberries on the nose with a fair whack of banana/sweet oak; the palate's hanging in there too, slightly steely/metallic with tart blackcurrants, and a grainy/tannic finish. Much more than just a curio, this may have been even better matched with the food.

1999 Yalumba Signature Cabernet Shiraz (magnum): Very dark to inky crimson/purple. Beautiful nose that's full of both Barossa & Cabernet characters, floral violets, meaty/dark chocolate, lifted mint and cassis supported by malty oak. The palate is full of sweet fruit, with blueberries/cassis and black jubes on the attack followed by meaty/savoury nuances, the oak well in the background and the finish incredibly long, soft and sweet. An under-rated Signature, this really is up there with the best of recent years, and my RWOTN.

2002 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon: Roasted capsicum, blood and earthy blackcurrants on the nose; the palate shows the cool year with minty/meaty characters and good grip, but I found the finish a little on the short side. Not a bad wine but a bit of a disappointment, especially in this strong flight.

1996 Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz: This is a wine that normally doesn't seem to generate many words or descriptors yet always seems to end up in WOTN contention, and this bottle is no exception. Very complex, earthy/capsicum, meaty/truffles, savoury blackcurrants, excellent velvety structure, perfect weight and length; a pretty good measuring stick, and the Signature was the only red beat it on my scoresheet.

1993 Thomas Hardy Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon: Earthy/minty nose with very sweet blackcurrants and a noticeable green/bean streak, a characteristic of the vintage in Coonawarra. The palate's on the green side but the fruit and structure are still very good, reminiscent of the St George of the same year; good drinking now but don't hold.

1990 Wendouree Shiraz (magnum): Another generous contribution from next door (thanks Gary & Chris). Inky crimson colour; bourbon oak on the nose, minty, medium-weight palate that unfortunately left me wondering what's the big fuss about this wine? Maybe it's because I got the very last dregs of what was left?

1986 Chateau Chasse-Spleen, Moulis en Medoc: Yet another generous contribution from next door (thanks Cam & Lynette). Very dark to inky crimson. After all the other reds this didn't look good, rather fishy/stinky and metallic; really came at the wrong end of the night to have any chance of impressing me.

NV Foggo Black Myriah Sparkling Shiraz: Worked as a palate refresher before the sticky and dessert; other than that it looked a little simple tonight, and seemed to lose it's freshness a little too quickly too.

2002 Chateau Lamothe Guignard 2me Cru, Sauternes: Bright, pineapple yellow. Sweet, fat nose full of quince and apricots but also subtle vanilla and mineral characters in the distance, sandy sea shells fresh from the beach. Sweet apricots on entry backed by sweet vanilla oak, leading to a medium-weight, grippy palate and long, mineraly/vanillin finish with a hint of glaceed pineapple. Maybe a touch advanced for its age but that's being very picky - it was an absolutely perfect match for the vanilla creme brulee and a lovely drop which is all that really matters.

1994 Quinta do Noval Vintage Oporto & 2001 Liebich Vintage Port: By this stage the notepad was abandoned and I just sat back and enjoyed these thoroughly good ports, still fresh and full of black liquorice and well matched spirit. An excellent finish to a great evening.

Cheers
Ian

As is always the case, great notes Ian.

Now I'm really p*ssed at having missed the 1999 Signature. I know where you can get a 6L bottle of this if you are interested

It is always nice to see anothers impression of the same wines.

More feedback from others would be nice to see as well. (HINT HINT)

Sorry about the delay. I've been very lazy. Here are my short, but honest notes. I must have lost my pen as the evening progressed as I lack notes for some of the last wines we drank :) . Thanks to all for a wonderful evening!

1995 Krug, Champagne
Baked bread and citrus on nose. Powerful citrus and some honey on palate. Excellent mousse and lingering acidity. Excellent.

2003 Richmond Grove Riesling
Diesel nose with some lime. More petrolium on the palate, but the limeyness is more present. Very nice structure and long finish. I like it a lot!

2006 Torbreck Viognier
Wonderfully aromatic and perfumy nose. Marmelade and hints of oak on the palate. Viscous. Lacking a acidity giving it a “flabby” mouthfeel.

2003 Stefano Lubiano "Collina" Chardonnay
Nose of exotic fruits with a minerally edge and hints of oak. Flavours of nuts and lollies. Good structure and a fine finish. I liked it.

2004 Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay (magnum)
Fantastic nose! Very varietal. Very pure! Intense! Same goes for the palate. Very very good. A wine with great harmony. Where did it all go? Almost my overall WOTN (definitely my WWOTN).

1998 Penfolds Yattarna Chardonnay
Corked

2003 Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay
A great wine, but somehow not as pristine as the 04. (thanks to Gavin, Mark & co by the way)

2005 Ramonet 1er Cru Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge, Clos de la Boudriotte
Fresh red berries on the nose. Nice fruit on the palate, but a bit stalky? OK wine.

1999 Domaine Bruno Clair 1er cru Gevrey-Chambertin, Les Cazetiers
Also fresh red fruit on the nose here, but also signs of ageing wet leather and hints of barnyard. The palate showed cherries and hints of prune. A bit one dimensional. Little tannins present. Lightweight.

2002 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Grèves Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus
Nose showing leather, smoke, spice and old dried up cherries. Good concentration. Some pepper. Fine tannins. A bit of green pepper on the finish. It was an interesting wine, but not a favourite.

2004 Kooyong Estate Pinot Noir
Intense fruity nose showing cherries and spice. Good concentration and flavours mirroring the nose. A bit one dimensional and lacks a bit of complexity. Enjoyable though.

2002 Henschke Johann’s Garden Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre
Liquorish and tomato puree nose (I've smelled nothing like it). Quite intriguing. Very powerful array of flavours. Tomato. Red meat. Intense. Tomato (again!). Very dense. Very cool and interesting wine.

1991 Fattoria Zerbina Pietramora Riserva Sangiovese di Romagna
Mint and eucalyptus dominant nose. Good structure and tannins. Still some fruitiness. I think the wine has aged well. A good drink.

2006 Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier
Very Viognier dominant nose. A bit too much marmelade. Some blacberries. Very aromatic. Very nice mouthfeel, but it feels a bit thin when compared to the shirazes. A bit of a disappointment. Would have been nice to try on it's own though. Maybe it needs some more time?

1999 Kay Brothers Amery Block 6 Shiraz

Powerful nose of dark fruits, oak vanillin, asphalt and hints of black pepper. Very concentrated on the palated. Mouthcoating. Loads of dark fruit flavours mixed with a nice oak component. Good tannins. Long finish. A blockbuster! I loved it.

2004 Best's Thomson Family Shiraz
This had been in a decanter for 7 hours prior to serving. Nose showing dark fruit, hints of liquerish and eucalyptus. Excellent fruit on the palate. Excellently structured. Goes on and on. Concentrated, but restrained. Close to RWOTN.

2001 Henschke Mount Edelstone Shiraz
Beautifully refined nose showing excellent pure fruit. Hints of blackcurrant and liquorish. The palate reveals layer and layers of fruit. Veeeery drinkable. Excellently structured and showing a long and yummy finish. My RWOTN.

1973 Redman Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon
Aromas of old coffee beans and leather. Drinking really well actually, surprisingly well actually. Redman can really make Cabernet that can age.

2002 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon
Capsicum nose with hints of blackcurrant. Palate not giving much. The structure is there, but it's missing something. I guess this was way to young for consumption. Quite dissapointing.

1996 Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz
Nose of shoepolish, leather couch and hints of cassis. Very nice palate with excellent tannins and long finish.

1990 Wendouree Shiraz (magnum)
Strangely non-yielding nose. When concentrating I could sniff some violets and dark fruit. Some hints of ageing. The palate was not very flavoursome, but the wine is massive and shows very good structure. (again, thans to Gavin, Mark & co for a tast of this)

1993 Thomas Hardy Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon
Limited notes. Quite enjoyable.

1999 Yalumba Signature Cabernet Shiraz (magnum)
No notes in my notebook. I do remember it as one of the best wines of the night though.

NV Foggo Black Myriah Sparkling Shiraz
I found this very bad. Must have been faulty.

2002 Chateau Lamothe Guignard 2me Cru, Sauternes
No notes, but I remember it being veeery nice. I was smiling from ear to ear when drinking it.

1994 Quinta do Noval Vintage Oporto & 2001 Liebich Vintage Port
No notes...sorry....it's a shame the ports come on so late. However, I do remember them being perfect wines to finish the offline with.

cheers,
Gustav the Norwegian
