2002 Penfolds
2002 Penfolds
I read with interest the articles on the “2002 Penfolds - BIN 389†and problems probably associated with corkage. Today I noticed 2002 Grange on special at $399 and wondered if Penfolds had an issue with faulty corks could it extend that far? I thought of buying a couple at that price but is it possible that there is an issue past the 389? Any ideas or thoughts? Andrew
The 389 I experienced sad hearted indifference to was by no means corked or tainted. I like to think that it was merely transitional, taking Ian's theory on board. The Kalmina may have been another matter though.
Cheers

My experience is that Penfold's wines post 1990 are no worse or better than most other wineries. I think we hear of more problems from their wines due to the sheer volume they make.
In my experience, Voyager Estate has been tracking at 50% defective wines based on the past 20+ bottles (likely cork related - TCA, randox) which is a shame. I love their wines but wont buy them anymore unless they come under screwcap.

All the reds screwcap since 2001. Whites too. There were some cork sealed 2001 too though. I have both of that vintage (not by choice).

Mike, I think it is more to do with price spent.
Went to the Perth hills wine show (on again this weekend if anybody is interested) last year and found an unbelievable Shiraz at $12 per bottle. Out of the 12 I bought two or three were drinkable. Same experience a friend had. We didn't bother doing anything about it. However, I paid $150 for a single magnum of 02 St Henri which has a cork issue (leakage) and I am furious at the lack of care by the wine juggernaut. I have put a very fair wack of hard earned cash into that company over the years.
It is price paid for me

Gary, not over here. The Yanks don't seem to like screwcaps, though I did get some Voyager chardy under Stelvin.
The Penfolds 04 Bin 60a and Kalimna I bought were under screwcap and I only got them because no-one wanted them. Those bottled under cork were essentially pre-sold. Go figure as they say here....
