Edinburgh Hotel Shiraz Challenge - 29 Jun 08

Post by pc79 »

I was lucky enough to be in Adelaide last week and popped in to the Edinburgh hotel in Mitcham for the Great Australian Shiraz Challenge -
Around 240 wines (all shiraz) were on offer from various vineyards around SA, WA and Victoria. It was a bit daunting trying to make a dent in the wines on offer, but I did my best.

There were some high quality shiraz including the ’04 St Henri, RWT, 05 Langi, Langmeil 1843, 05 Torbreck ‘The Factor’etc. Plus a number of quaffers were on offer.

Results aren’t out as yet, but my picks (from a novice’s perspective) are below.

Best Wines > $35
1. 2006 Hentley Farm ‘The Beast’
2. 2004 Penfolds St Henry
3. 2006 Kaesler ‘The Bogan’
4. 2005 Mt Langhi Ghiran
5. 2005 Woodstock ‘The Stocks’

Best Wine < $35
1. 2006 Torzi Matthews Frost Dodger
2. 2006 Veronique
3. 2006 Tim Adams
4. 2006 Majella
5. 2006 Kilikanoon Killerman’s Run

pc79,
I agree, it was a very nice, but daunting task to get through the wines. I posted a note on this event earlier (see http://forum.auswine.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=8333&sid=d782b64e6f0b13ce497e12f4fefdfa63) and I see that we have "The Beast" in common. It was indeed a great Barossa blockbuster. I also agree that the 2006 Frost Dodger Shiraz is a great wine for the price. I never got to taste the Penfolds stuff as I didn't bother queueing up (every time I was around the Penfolds stand it was very crowded).

cheers

Came 1st last year. I thought it had a bit more substance than many of the other 'same same' shiraz's that were sampled throughout the day.
