The Great Auswine Forum Name Guessing Game

Post by Gavin Trott »

Here's hopefully a bit of fun for those of you having a slow day! (I guess I must be!)

As you probably know we have many many fake registrations on the auswine forum, some by spammers, many by 'bots', small pieces of software written specifically for that purpose, to register on forums like ours.

I get dozens every day, some days, particularly Monday after a weekend, perhaps a hundred or more! My job is to go through and sort out the genuine people joining, from those not! I then delete the fakes, otherwise the whole forum would get cluttered up by hundreds/thousands of phoney registrations!

Its great fun! Indeed, its so much fun you can join in!

Below is a list of today's 'joiners'.

Included in this list somewhere are 7 genuine forum members, people who have joined, posted and been part of us.

Your task, should you choose to accept is, is to pick the 7 genuine names from the fakes! Which 7 would you leave? (remembering that you are deleting all the others, and if you delete a genuine name, people tend to get a little annoyed!)

Go on, have a go! No huge prize pool, but perhaps the winner can do my forum admin job for a month!! (yes, I did make one of them easy to spot!)

By the way, the yes no after the name indicates whether they have, as yet, 'activated' their account ready for posting

Time to go for a real full name policy?

State it in the sign-up material and anything that isn't a full name gets deleted. FWIW I'd be happy to post under full name - I do elsewhere.

Ian

Gavin, now I know why you delete so many "real" people at times, you don't mention checking whether there are any posts or not for the users.

Since I or you delete spam posts pretty quickly most times, anyone with posts left on the forums stands a chance of being genuine and shouldn't be deleted simply by examining the name. I don't have access to that part of the admin stuff (I know your offer of that as the prize wasn't serious), but the general list of new users does show if there are any posts.
Cheers
Brian

Fun's over, back to reality, Monday morning and another 160 or so to delete, by hand.

To the contest, for anyone interested, the real names were

TORB (well, he says he's real anyway)
Pizzler
vinx
Aceituna
Swee
alexd74
c6109

That was it.

On the topic of spiced ham, an anti-spam measure I have seen taken on another (non-wine related) forum is to only allow users to start a new thread once their post count is above 5.

Its not a silver bullet but I think the approach is somewhat effective.

They also provide a special "garbage" section where new users are able to post in order to get their count up to the limit without creating low content posts in the primary forums.

I do it all the time unfortunately.

So hard to tell given some folk's choice of user names.

I just had a go at it and only got 4 out of 7. And, I was sure Lip Plumper was a cert!
It's not an easy job. I hope you have more info than just the username.

Nope

User name and whether they have 'activated' or not.

I can also check if they have posted yet or not, so those who are serious, and post immediately, even with a Who Am I helps greatly.

but whichever way you try it, its a pain!
