TN: 1999 Centenary of Federation Red Magnum

1999 Centenary of Federation 1901-2001 Red Magnum: Medium to dark red with some bricking on the rim. Surprisingly leathery and developed nose with some dark chocolate, earthy raspberries, a little petrol/truffle, tobacco/bourbon, and a ton of mint. Minty entry with plenty of vanillin oak followed by medium weight minty/peppery blackcurrant fruit with a ripe/chocolaty edge, finishing minty/peppery but not especially long. Attractive drinking now, but it really lacks weight and is too oaky & developed for my liking to hold too much longer.

I always thought this one was meant to be drunk in 2001, it never did anything for me and I was never tempted to buy it, I'm surprised it's still drinking reasonably well.

I opened one late last year (Oct?) and thought it was a very pleasant wine. Holding up well - would have guessed from the Hunter due to the leathery character you mention and the weight of the wine (medium bodied). Didn't get the oak you saw. Paid $20 at a retailer about 5 or 6 years ago. Definitely time to drink up (i think i have one left).

The blurb on the label said it should hit its peak in around 10 years, and could be cellared for 20 to 30 years in good conditions. A second opinion early on suggested 10 years maximum was far more realistic, and it certainly looks like that comment was on the mark.

I got one of these for winning a sales award and wondered how it was travelling , i wanted to be an old man drinking this and reminissing what had been achieved 2010 sounds like a good time to drink it , Does anyone think i am leaving it too long to enjoy ?

If your cellaring conditions are good I could see it holding another couple of years if you're willing to risk it - I can't really see it improving though.
