Sorry Kris, I have already cancelled Linda's on King and confirmed Elio. Maybe for the next offline eh?
Thanks for the reply cuttlefish. Hope Delhi treats you well. I could remember being there some 6-7 years ago for NYE and all I could find was Kingfisher beer..... I think it is still the worst beer I have ever had...
Thus, confirmed attendees:
- griff (Carl) and Rebecca
- Muscat Mike
- camw
- Baby Chickpea (Danny)
- Monghead (Lennart) and Wifey (Lisa)
- bacchaebabe (Kris) and Lisa
As to wine theme, as Carl has requested preferably no WA wines, and I'm not too keen for SA reds (had way too many lately), what about an International theme?
"Noice Foreign Stuff"
As to options or not, I'm not too fussed.
Looking at the cellar, I'm thinking I'm good for 2 reds, with another in reserve. Perhaps a port or sticky depending on how we are travelling...
Cheers,
Monghead.

Cool, Elio's sounds great anyway.
Lisa and I are in. Only thing is she's just come down with a sore throat so depending on how that tracks she may be fine, she may come but be grumpy and horse and not be able to taste anything or in the worst case scenario, may not come. This is fairly unlikely though as we're generaly pretty reliable once we commit. If that ends up being the case, I'll ring Elio direct and cancel for one. I'll be there though.
So, to the theme, does NZ count as foreign? I've got a few pinots or I've just thought of a nice super tuscan that could do the job and be completely appropriate. Might just be entering its drinking window too, thinking about it. How does a 97 Antinori Tignanello sound?
I'll have to think of something else too. Maybe a white or we could start with a sparkling shiraz. This will be oztrailyen though. I'll think about this one as I have a few choices.

We have a white bubbly that fits the theme but we were wanting to open a wine from our terroir while we are here
We were thinking a red but happy to change to a white if desired. At least it isn't a wine from WA or SA

Bartenders are supposed to have people skills. Or was it people are supposed to have bartending skills?
Hi all,
I'm not fussed. I reckon anything will be good in this company. Thus, let's scrap the foreign bit, and open it up to "something noice".
Kris, I like the sound of tasting a 97 super tuscan...
As for wifey and I, we are predominantly red bigoted, so our cellar definitely reflects that, and thus will stick to 2 reds, with a spare, and probably a port or sticky.
Cheers,
Monghead.

An update on the glassware guys.
Just rang Elio, and they were more than happy for us to go through a few of their glasses in the course of the night. They only have one size for reds and whites, and stated that at least they weren't the bistro style ones, and that some serious swirling action could be performed if not filled too fully.
As to decanters, they have half a dozen or so for the restaurant, and are happy to allow us the use of 3-4 of them. Since most of us will be bringing the wines for options, perhaps decanting at home if necessary, and returning it to the bottle may be a good idea...

Thank you Cam for posting a list of the wines.
Thank you all for providing wifey and I an opportunity to taste this variety of wine on the night.
I will leave more detailed write-ups to more esteemed who attended, but I must say that the wines of the night for me were the 1981 Chateau Musar and the 1998 Muller-Catoir Haardter Mandelring Scheurebe Auslese. Both of these wines were provided by Cam (i think
), so once again, a big thank you. My honourable mentions go to the 1995 Antinori Tignanello and 1991 Penfolds Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 707.
Another note, I was interested to see the Rhone makers make the same mistake as we do, and put too much viognier in a SV blend.
Anyways, thank you all who attended once again, and hopefully, we could do it again.
Cheers,
Monghead.

Thanks to Monghead for organizing this one and it was nice to catch up with old and new faces. All wines were showing really well and the food played a decent supporting act.
1992 Leasingham Classic Clare Sparkling Shiraz
Good dark red paling to the edge with very little brown. Earthy, savoury character with cinnamon and cloves. Maybe a touch of nice brett adding nice complexity and finishing with somesine tannin. Excellent.
2000 Besserat de Bellefon Grande Tradition Champagne
Pale brassey colour with an abundant fine bead. Smokey nose with a touch of toast. Nice wine but finishes short. Good to Very good.
2002 Petaluma Riesling Under screwcap. Fresh lemon nose with toast coming through. Primary lemon on the palate with a waxy weight to the texture. Lovely Aussie Riesling here and should go on to do even better things. Very good to Excellent.
1978 Chateau La Tour Haut-BrionLevel before opening was base of neck. Medium red with just a touch of bricking. Hard to see under the light we had. A fully developed leathery nose. Completely resolved tannin finishing with a earthy finish with a distinct note of ash. The finish lingers for a while. Drinking perfectly now. Excellent.
1996 Chateau Leoville Poyferre
Deep red. Closed on the nose. A young claret with very good potential. The tannins still quite prominent. Perhaps just entering a hole from which it should emerge in a few years with even greater quality. Good to Very good with Excellent potential
1981 Chateau Musar
Was this high shoulder Cam? Cherry red with brown paling to a clear edge. Lovely Gorse aromas. The fruit has secondary development and that allows complete harmony with the brett and slight VA in this one. Outstanding wine. Thanks Cam.
2000 Chateau Musar Hochar
Much younger than the prior wine. First Hochar for me and don’t detect much difference between this and the first label in quality. The fruit is still quite primary so the deliberate faults stick out somewhat but the potential is there. Good to Very good.
1995 Antinori Tignanello
On the initial pour I swear it smelled like chocolate chip biscuit dough. This settled to cocoa later on. Dark plum colour. This was a lovely smooth wine with abundant super-fine tannin. I wonder if this is between primary and secondary development as well. ?potential to improve. Very good.
1991 Penfolds Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 707
Coffee and intense blackberry on the nose with a nice coconut note. The tannin has reolved but the fruit was still young and primary. Very Good to Excellent with potential
2004 Gangloff Cote-Rotie La Barbarine
Dark purple-red. White florals, apricot and strong black pepper. Lovely wine but the viognier may need some time to integrate. Very Good to Excellent with potential
2004 Tyrrell's Shiraz Cabernet Vat 8
Dark red. Only 10% cabernet (I got it right this time) but evenly dominating the nose and palate. A very young but lovely example of an aussie red blend with Hunter notes of earth in it as well as the youthful mulberry flavours. Good now but potential is here as well.
1998 Pfeiffer Tokay Auslese
Deep bronze. Strong flavours of peaches and cream. Good
1998 Muller-Catoir Haardter Mandelring Scheurebe Auslese
Ivory colour. Strong pineapple dominant fruit salad nose leading to a similar palate. Very good.
1995 Hetszolo Tokaji Aszu 6 Puttonyos
This is the stuff. Served blind. Copper colour. Unique taut tokaji nose with dark caramel notes. Huge viscous palate super rich yet still balance with acid. Lengthy finish. Outstanding. Thanks Monghead.

Bartenders are supposed to have people skills. Or was it people are supposed to have bartending skills?
Thanks for posting your notes on the wines, Carl.
Hope your wines at home are OK with the power outages...
And it is nice to hear someone else as crazy as I am when it comes to checking out every independent bottle shop I pass. Hey, maybe now there's two of us, we won't be seen as crazy, but "special"???
Cheers,
Monghead.

1992 Leasingham Classic Clare Sparkling Shiraz
Cherry, raspberry and some leather and earthy elements to the nose. There is a delicious sweetness to the palate that is well countered by savoury nuances. Very enjoyable.
90/100
2000 Besserat de Bellefon Grande Tradition Champagne
Cheesy and toasty nose. Rounded mouthfeel. Lacks depth and finishes short.
83/100
2002 Petaluma Hanlin Hill Riesling
Lemon, orange peel and some toast aromas starting to develop. The palate is long and full, with incredible intensity. This wine holds so much future potential.
93/100
1978 Chateau La Tour Haut-Brion
Tobacco, bramble, ash and smoke on the nose. The tannins are fully resolved, leading to a medium bodied palate with soft fruits and good aged character. Very pleasant to drink wine at its peak.
89/100
1996 Chateau Léoville-Poyferré
Youthful nose of blackberry, spice, cassis and cedar. Intensely tannic on the palate, but the structure is good and this is going to improve greatly once the tannins soften and it takes on additional complexity. Needs time.
90/100
1981 Chateau Musar
Cherry/kirsch, smoked meats, earth and honey. The palate shows amazing fruit sweetness that is balanced superbly by aged earthy, spicy characters. Complex and long. If this was deconstructed too much you may be able to pick out many faults, but amazingly all mixed together they have achieved harmony.
94/100
2000 Hochar Père et Fils
Horsey, with earth, raspberry and a touch of VA. The palate is sweet and soft, it is quite drinkable but looked very simple in comparison to the older Musar had before. Will probably show better given time.
87/100
1995 Antinori Tignanello
Cocoa, blackcurrants, graphite and cedary nose. Lovely medium bodied, savoury palate with excellent balance.
91/100
1991 Penfolds Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon
A bold nose, with tobacco, cassis and blackberry. The youthfulness of the wine is evident on the palate as well, with primary fruit still dominant. The tannin structure and overall build of the wine is such that I think this has the potential for greatness.
92/100
2004 Gangloff Côte-Rôtie La Barbarine
Must be close to 10% viognier in this, but it did not bother me as it did some others at the table. Very pretty nose, with lifted fragrant floral notes, apricot and pepper. Long and rich in the mouth with some spice evident. A little bit young still tonight, but very nice anyway.
90/100
2004 Tyrrell's Shiraz Cabernet Vat 8
Earthy, with some raspberry notes as well. Bright, red fruited palate with some earthiness coming through in the background. Tannins are bold, but should settle with time.
88/100
1998 Pfeiffer Tokay Auslese
Caramel, toffee and apple aromas. Medium body and sweetness. Ready to drink now, it could do with some more complexity but I don't think it has the structure to age much more.
85/100
1998 Müller-Catoir Haardter Mandelring Scheurebe Auslese
Passionfruit, spice, peach and pineapple aromas. Lovely, lingering sweetness to the palate and it just has the acid to keep it fresh and balanced. This style of wine is right up my alley.
93/100
1995 Hétszolo Tokaji Aszu 6 Puttonyos
Honey, coconut, pineapple and maple syrup. Rich, honey like palate, but with excellent complexity and acidity. Fantastic length, this was a great wine to finish the evening with.
93/100

Tokaji Aszú
G'day,
I was Googling the net where to buy Tokaji Aszú in Sydney or even NSW, when I came across this little corner of the cyber word. Have to admit, I’m not a big drinker or even a taster, but I know that drinking this particular brand of wine is almost puts you to a little place of heaven on earth
.
As I sad I'm not a big drinker, but when I want to drink wine, I rather fork out a bit extra for that special moment. So far I only was able to find Tokaji Aszú at x shop
a 3 Puttonyos and a 5 Puttonyos both 2001.
I was hoping that maybe you guys or someone in your circle could give me some links where to look for it in Sydney or even NSW.
Thank you and best regards, Sharpy
