Australia Day BBQ drinks

Post by John #11 »

A big Hi to Sam Kekovitch.

After the obligatory beers...
we had no less than 3 types of lamb on the BBQ today.
Someone brought some octopus, and it was duly fed to the neighbours dog. :)
The lamb was washed down with ...

1990 Wynns John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon
I always knew this bottle would be sensational, and it was just that.
Exemplary and mature Coonawarra Cabernet, with just the barest hint of greenness, but mostly cigar box, tobacco leaf, luscious and rich dark fruit and berries, soft tannins, and a very long savoury finish.
I'm keeping the next bottle for another 5-10 years though.
Exceptional

and

2004 Zema Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
You know, this wasn't put to shame at all by the Riddoch, and, for around $25 a bottle, it represents incredible value.
This wine has settled down well in the last 6 months or so, and lost quite a bit of the original rawness it had at release time.
Meaty, and a little herbaceous, with a very nice bouquet, it now has much softer tannins, with rounded edges, and still a medium long finish.
Excellent

What did you guys and gals out there drink???

Two weeks ago I drank a lovely bottle of the Wynns JR '90 Cab Sauv... It showed very well, quite funky and earthy to begin with, developing into a very elegant wine.... On the same night a Wendouree Shiraz '90 was also drunk, looking much younger and fresher than the Wynns.... If you can get your hands on a well kept bottle of this wendouree then you will be smiling. It was the wine of the night.

I had a lot of Little Creatures Pale Ale and some 05 Majella sparkling shiraz.

Yum.
