Hunter Valley Wine

Post by dsreardon »

Hi everyone in wine lande,

I have some friends that are on their way to the Hunter in a few weeks.

I no they are white wine drinkers and the Hunter does some excellent Semillions and Chardonnays.

Can anyone suggest a few hidden jems for them to try while in the hunter.

Regards

Dave

Hi Dave,

I recently went to the Hunter but I'm more of a red wine drinker.

We were there during the week so the foot traffic at the wineries was minimal which was good.

If you are going Mon-Fri I would suggest Tyrells, they have a great selection and offer some back vintages to try. The quality is also second to none.

I hear that it can get pretty crowded though on weekends.

McWilliams Mount Pleasant - Good Sem and Reds, also have wines from other areas available - Make sure you try the Lovedale and O'shea if available. Lunch is good aswell.

Bimbadgen - Decent wines, good staff, fantastic restaurant (deffinatley recommended)

Peppertree - Great all rounder

Peterson's - There is peterson's (up the mountain) for good old school styles and Peterson's bubbles house for well bubbles

Tyrell's Good for sem and reds like McW

Brokenwood Great all rounder - see if they have a sneaky bottle of rayner or graveyard available

Keith Tulloch's Get into his Kester Shiraz - YUM

Pokolbin Estate One of the only hunter wineries with a hunter reisling, and pretty good.

Capercaille - Nice smaller cellar door, check out the creel sem, the gewurtz and the ghille shiraz (if available) all stunning wines and all hunter. if Alasdair or daniel (the winemakers) are in cellar door be sure to say hi, they are great guys.

There is plenty more but that is a good run down of the pick of the crop.

Brett
