1999 Cullen Cabernet Merlot

Post by JohnD »

Deep dark & brooding colour, one swirl of the glass and the aromas were bountiful and inspiring. Cassis, spice and dark berry fruits accosted the senses making me salivate in anticipation of what was to come.

A wonderful fruit palate with great depth displaying an array of flavours, layers of berry fruits, chocolate, some mint, all well supported by fine drying tannins and crisp acid that balance beautifully well. Very good length on the palate leads to a loooong finish.
This wine already shows finesse and complexity. If possible leave alone for another 5 yrs at least to be truly rewarded.

Note: tasted 13.8.03 Vertical tasting of consisting of 97,98,99,00 & 01
Wine was not decanted & opened approx 1 hr before tasting.

I had my only bottle of 2000 almost a couple of years ago and yep, it had the typically Cullen cab/merl very lengthy finish. I think it was mature enough after five years but it hadn't been cellared in ideal conditions. Here's a link to Vanya's, Halliday's and Oliver's reviews on the winery's website:

I drank too many 99s and 01s much too early but still have a couple of bottles of each for (much) later. Oh, and a couple of 04s for yet later.

What other gems have you stashed away?

Haven't touched my 98, 99's or 01 yet. Maybe in 3-4 years they'll come onto my drinking horizon.

Don't know the 98 - but 99 and 01 will definitely benefit from another 5+ years, the 01 given a longer maturation period by the winery. But I wouldn't be surprised if the 99 is longer-lived.

The 2000 would be drinking very nicely now but should hold for at least another 5 years.

I suggest that you try a 98 next year to give your drinking window/s some perspective.

Cheers

I had the 1995 cullens last week and it was only just into its drinking window - but a lovely wine with great depth and length.

cheers
