TN: 01 Tintara Shiraz

Post by bacchaebabe »

Just got a case of this as cleanskins and there's sometimes no time like the present to check things out.

01 Hardys Tintara Shiraz

Vibrant purple with red edges. Some alcohol on the nose and a little astringent. Quite mellow on the palate initially. Slightly hot finish. As it was a cleanskin I've no idea what teh alcohol on this was. Big structure though. No obvious fruit. Hollow mid palate. Opened up a lot in the glass and turned to sweet mulberry. Much better the more time it sat there so would definitely benefit from a decant. Some of the heat also blew off and became much better with some time.
Cheers,
Kris

Thanks for the note. Are you damming it with faint praise or did it end up worthwhile after time in the decanter? Also, would you age it any further?

cheers

Quoting the tasting notes I have on hand, courtesy of an e-tailer.

This e-tailer's suggested cellaring times are typically shorter than others may recommend as he prefers to drink wines whilst "fruit flavours are evident."

I'd speculate that this wine would drink well over the next 5 years, if stored in ideal conditions. 2-3 if it's been lying around on a shop floor.

I hope this helps, if it's a thread-hijack please let me know. I'm very much a wineforum newbie.

TASTING DATE 25/04/2005
Very deep crimson black colour with deep crimson black hue. Aroma of vanilla and spice, followed by hints of violets, blackberry and liquorice. The palate has good weight, with flavours of toasted oak, liquorice and spice emerging followed by a black pepper back palate. Fine grained tannins. Aftertaste of lingering white pepper.
Cellar: 2 to 3 years Value: Score out of 100: 90

It was kinda weird and very much changed in the glass. It smelt very big but first gulp came across very mellow.

I thinkit's in a bit of a closed stage at the moment and would benefit from a few more years. Probably 2-3. If you're going to drink it now, i'd defnitely suggest a decant of at least an hour.

Personally didn't find any white pepper but agree with licorice and spice with a blackberry / mulberry core.

I'll have the other half of the bottle tonight so might get a better picture.
Cheers,
Kris

Ahh, the infamous development hole. Makes shiraz disapointing and cabernet typical  Seriously though, sounds about right with a big concentrated shiraz at 6 years of age. Losing primary and yet to gain secondary character to sustain the palate.

Nevertheless will try one this Christmas when I get back to Sydney! :)

cheers
