Ian, what did you think of "The Ned"? I quite enjoyed the couple of bottles of 05 I had, thought it a very good representative Malborough SB.

We've not cracked it yet, but when we do I suspect I'll be on my own (The missus' is a Kiwi, yet of all the wines she hates, NZ sauvignon tops the list).
I've heard good things and at Ã‚Â£7 (~ Aus$18) on offer, thought I better make my own call.
I'll try to remember to post when it gets cracked.

BTW, the 05 Old Vine is a much classier wine than the Bogan, you'd better get some of that as well.

Re Obsidian 3 years in oak, I think it was Dan Standish who told us it is better to leave a red with the right fruit in new oak for 3 years rather than take it out at 18, or 24 months, he said it all settles down / out and comes back into balance around 33-36 months. John Glaetzer had it right all along. ;-)

The Obsidian is pretty classy, I sacrificed one of my 6 to my Monday tasting group last night and it was a clear winner.

I already have the Old Vine 05!
I have always thought John Glaetzers wines too oaky. I will open an Obsidian, and see over a few nights.
Do I remember you saying the 04 Old Block is sensational? Do I need it?

No, you don't need it! But it is a very classy wine, good enough for me to buy for the first time since the 98 and I only bought 1 of that. I thought it had more interest and potential than the PL Stonewell 2002.

Thanks, Ian. After reading all the comments and TNs about the Meerlust Rubicon on the UK Wine Forum, I thought I'd get one and try it out in the future.

I really like the Castello di Ama 2001, but they are all gone in Japan. I'm going to give my remaining three bottles another three years before revisiting them in 2010. After Wayno's positive experience with this wine for the 04 vintage, I thought I'd get a bottle to suss out it. Will post a TN later in the autumn (Aussie spring) when the weather cools down a bit to drink more reds.

we must have got a dud bottle,
ours exploded, after sitting in the fridge for a week and being moved 2 feet from fridge to desk, after the explosive-ness faded it revealed a terribly dull and lifeless wine.

The mixed case was from the one source and although the wines may have been available individually from different sources for bit less, free freight and convenience of shopping make them good value.

Apart from other daily drinkers, picked up a case of Jip Jip Rocks Limestone Coast Shiraz 2005 as a quaffer for $11.39/btl.

I arrived in Australia (Adelaide) in the beginning of September and I'll be leaving in a years time.When I leave I hope to take home a nice selection for the cellar. The Villa Maria were a bargain at about $17 a bottle.

The girlfriend walked in the door with the case of Saltram so I was one happy camper.

And the Arrowfield, well it's not anything special, I quite liked it at about $20 a bottle as a nice little quaffer. I liked it even more when they told me it was a buy one case, get another case deal making them $10 a pop!!

Like I said, nothing flash, but a very, very drinkable wine. Personally, I think Arrowfield is much maligned..... But each to their own.
