07 Vintage - Long term cellaring prospects?

Have just been blessed with the birth of our 1st child and I am interested in birth year wines. What potential prospects can you recommend? Looking at Aussie reds - Single bottle or magnum. Any positive feedback appreciated.

Very early to say at this stage as most reds that you would be looking at would still be in barrels. I would look in about a year or two when they are released.

Having said that, Margaret River region had a cracker of a year by most reports.

A few weeks ago I was at Clare, and my mission was to buy riesling. The few wine makers I spoke to said that they're really happy with the quality of the grapes - of all types - but aren't happy with the quantity.

I haven't had a chance to go anywhere else yet!

Yeah. It's hard to get a straight reply. I've never heard of anybody being unable to source decent grapes...

I guess that might mean that wine makers who source their grapes from a particular region all experience off years in the wine making abilities... at the same time!

Peter, you can rest assured there will be some cellar-worthy wines from 2007, it's just too early to tell what they will be and where they will be from.

Margaret Rive may indeed be the best bet, but there will be some from SA too, but they will be in short supply, especially when the alert people work out who managed to get the best fruit and make the best wines.

The premium 2005 reds are not all out by a long shot yet, so you've got about 15-18 months before the good 2007's start hitting the market.

Hunter Shiraz. Excellent vintage..and I will be bottling some of my own (2007 Mountain X - 1/3 new French Puncheons, wild yeast, 40% whole bunch old vine shiraz) wine in magnums.
Margaret River looks the goods too.
There will be other excellent wines from 2007 - just not much of some.
