Brisbane Riverfestival 2007

The annual Brisbane Riverfestival is just around the corner....Saturday 1st September.

Any forum members in Brissy on that night are invited to my home for dinner and drinks. At risk of bragging.....I live on the top of Bowen Hills with a panoramic view of the city. Not a first class view of the fireworks, however pretty impressive anyway. The 'dump and burn' F1-11's fly right past my balcony.

I was thinking a light home delivery meal. Maybe:

Fresh prawns from Sammies Girl in Hamilton (which I can pick up earlier in the day), followed by..

With a bubbles theme for the wine....to match the "sparkly" night :)

Children are welcome.

Anybody interested? Any suggestions?

The dump & burn won't be around much longer. The Pig will be retired in 09ish by Super Hornets- whose burners make a bit of noise and a modest efflux.

Dear Santa, (really wanting to insert a list of wants here) is Sat night welcome for new members? If you are still contemplating this I(and 3 others) are interested. We were heading for the water somewhere to consume some wine and have been living in our own vinous world for too long and it would be nice to meet some others from Brisbane interested in wines(and food). It looks like 2-4 of us will join you Maria - thanks for the invitation and I shall call you tomorrow to get address.
If there are no prerequisites for wines, we will just wing it with ... ?

At present I have four other "winos" joining in, but there could be some "last minute tag-alongs".

The F1-11's just did their practice run, and shook the house. I was hoping it was thunder.....which hopefully would bring some rain!

First off I would like to say what a delight it was to meet Glenn and Mel. It is not often that you warm to people on the first meet; but this was one of those occasions. Absolutely my please! Welcome to Brisbane :)

Lovely to catch up with Ken, Debbie and Paul again.

The fireworks were spectacular and the F1-11's delivered.......

Thank you guys for bringing along some interesting wines.

Lindauer Brut
Brassy, toasty, vegemite yeast and cassis. 12% alc. 89 points.

Banrock Station "Reserve" Sparkling Shiraz
A fruitbomb. Clean, sweet but doesn't cling. Simple and straightforward. 14% alc. 86 Points.

2002 VineCrest Bottle Fermented Sparkling Shiraz
Great big Barossan fruitbomb (aged), with some minty oak and mushrooms. Long and complex. Fruity with touch of soft savouryness. 12.5% alc. 94 points.

2002 Esk "The Terraces" Malbec/Merlot/Cabernet Franc
Decanted one hour. Nose a little closed at first. Tannins are fine, chewy and assertive (not agressive). Blackcurrant Merlot and rustic flavour fruit, but also a bit closed. Very heavy Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Balanced and clean. Will the tannins poke out too much? Should be cellared a few more years. Will try again in six months time. 14.7% alc. 92 Points.

2005 Torzi Matthews Frost Dodger Shiraz
Decanted one hour. This is a big Eden Valley Shiraz with good VA and minty oak. A touch of coconut from US, but not too much. Palate showed finesse and elegance, long, smooth, mint, vanilla, smoke, blackberry, anise and spices. Very smooth. 14.5% alc. 95 Points.

2005 Jardim do Bomfim Shiraz
Flat fruit on nose. Acid poked out. Palate flatish, but short and clean. Black fruit. Paul said that he paid $10.00 for this wine. At that price I will be seeking some out myself! 14.5% alc. 87 Points.

2004 Belvoir Park "The Symposiarch" Shiraz/Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon

Palate deceptively Cabernet like. Toasty oak. Monster acidity. 14% alc. This wine was awarded the Trophy for Highest Pointed Alternative Blend or Varietal of Show at this years Brisbane Fine Wine Festival. It was also in the running for the "Wine Women Want" Trophy.

Cracking night Maria! I think we can suggest some new terms for Parker, discovered on the night,

"skyward afterburn that goes on for 30 seconds plus"

"explosive rainbow of colours on the palate"

"whiff of firecracker"

"story-bridge iron-like tannins"

Seriously, you are the hostess with the mostess. Several cheeses, fruits, dips, breads, salmon worked a treat. Mel and I loved the Torzi shiraz - seamless and elegant - refreshing in the era of overworked syrupy hot fruitbombs. Top notch shiraz and great value, yes please. A very enjoyable night and many thanks. Pity I didnt take photos esp of your fridge, doused with sparkling shiraz.
