Oxidised 2000 Petaluma Tiers

Post by Gasman »

Opened a bottle purchased from cellar door at Bridewater Mill. Perfectly cellared, good ullage and good looking cork, but the wine was deep orange and madierised. Anyone else have similar problems with this or other vintages?

Gasman,

Recently purchased, or purchased in 2003/4 and stored at your home? In a temp controlled cellar or just in the wine rack?

Does sound like a touch of random oxidation but other factors may have played a part, hard to say without more info.

Cheers

Oxidised Tiers? What's new. They seem to be crap prior to 2002 vintage. Big problems with this wine. Send it back. They have a problem , were asking top dollar and the wine is a non starter.

Grant, purchased at cellar door on release, and stored in a wine fridge at 14 degrees since purchase.

Rooview, this is the only 2000 Tiers I've opened, so can't compare colour. That said, I've never had a dry white this dark that wasn't completely stuffed - this wine was oxidised beyond reproach.

Have e-mailed Petaluma - will let you know there response.

All I can say is that I have had a hell of a run with top-flight whites in recent years. So much so that I've basically given up (buying more). Better to get top-end "cheapies" and drink them within a year or two. LEAS, Giaconda, Mount Mary (to a lesser extent), Cullen, Moss Wood, Petaluma.... I'd say that after a few years bottle age, about 70% of them have been very, very ordinary. Oxidised, and in most cases, replaced without fuss. RK from Giaconda went as far as to replace with same vintage - stock from his own cellar. MM paid me a visit at home one evening, with some wine in tow.

Colleague of mine recently got 6xPenfolds Bin 98A from the cellar door, and every one was no good. Not sure how he went with his refund/replacement.

I bought 2 x Yattarna 1998 last year, both oxidised, both refunded by retailer.

How do I know that the 70% were so ordinary?

Because of the remaining 30%.

When I get one that's on song, boy do I know it. But it's a hell of a game of Russian Roulette!

DIAM closures might help - haven't had a bad one yet.
Stelvin might too, but I'm not sure yet. Seem a bit stinky a lot of the time.
Let the kids out!
