Grant Burge Filsell 2003 - Acid attack?

Post by Michael McNally »

Tried this on Wednesday night. I have never had a wine that transformed the way this did in the decanter. On opening it had acid all over the palate. Not totally undrinkable, but certainly unpleasant. It took fully 3 hours for the acid to retreat and the wine to show through (we drank a bottle of Fox Creek Vixen in the meantime - yum). After 4 hours it was good. After 5 approaching great, but also approaching empty. My guest, who had brought the bottle said that the whole case had been like this, with only the odd bottle approachable and beautiful shortly after opening, with many others turfed.

Has anyone else experienced this with this wine. Is it bottle variation, random oxidation (creating the 'good ones') or is it simply too soon for the Filsell?

Haven't tried the 03 but I was initially very disappointed by the 02, the fruit buried beneath a huge oak tree and yeah, some acid. Similarly to the 03, by the end of the bottle some hours later, the fruit had surfaced and submerged most everything else. Massive, sweet, dark plums and sweet black cherries.

Cheers

Hi Michael,

I have tasted the 2003 about six months ago and purchased 5 soon after and expect this wine to shine in another 6 or 7 years. I did detect some acidity but feel it is well proportioned in relation to the rest of the "package".

Cheers,

Francois
