what a loss not only to the Hunter Valley but to the whole Australian wine industry.

A sad day for the industry. Always quick on his feet with a comment about the state of the industry, his charisma and foresight will be extremely missed. I for one will crack out a bottle or two of Hunter Sem tonight to celebrate your extraordinary life. Condolences to your family, lets hope the afterlife is not dry!

A bottle of Rothbury Estate Shiraz with dinner tonight.

I still have vivid memories of him correctly identifying samples of tap water from each of Australia's capital cities.

Vale Len Evans. Still remember seeing on him on TV, of course talking about wine and tasting it, some time in the 60s. A real character is lost to the wine-loving community.

Len Evans was one of those larger than life legends I always wanted the opportunity to meet one day, but alas it wasn't meant to be.

His passion and contribution to the Australian wine industry will probably never be equalled - it's a sad loss but also a celebration of the life of one of our true icons.

Well done Campbell on a fitting tribute.

I never met the man, but my most vivid memory of Len Evans is of a nasal, raspy, almost high pitched English accent, which came from a cherubic face that broke into a grin without too much cajoling and then the head was thrown back in laughter. And that was all from images of him on TV being interviewed about some aspect of wine.

But Campbell said it best The tallest tree in the forest is down. They'll be drinking fine wine in heaven from now.

Very sad news, and great article, Campbell.

Even though I've never lived in Oz, I still often heard the name of Len Evans, and heard the respectful comments about how he almost singlehandedly raised the profile of the Oz wine industry, acting as a passionate ambassador for Oz wine around the world.

In the past, I've enjoyed a few Rothbury wines of his, particularly some old Hunter semillons that I loved.
