Icon lunch round two

Folks,

this Friday my two work colleagues and I will be participating in our 2nd Icon wine lunch. The first Icon wine lunch was absolutely marvellous (to borrow a saying) and I'm looking forward to this Friday. One thing we realised last time was we perhaps had the drinking order incorrect. We started with Wirra Wirra "the Angelus", then had the Petaluma Connawarra and finished on the 98 Peter Lehmann Stonewell.

The wines we've selected are as follows;

2001 Lakes Folly Cabernet
2001 Howard Park Cabernet Sauvignon
2002/3 or 4 Jasper Hill Geogia's Paddock Shiraz (whatever is available)

Any recommended order these wines should be consumed in? We are having Tapas again. Your views would be appreciated (all wines will be opened early in the morning to breathe).

Next month we will be having the Magnum of Rockford Basket Press.

As you have them listed looks about right, or with only 3 wines get 3 glasses each and open them all . The 2 Cabs would be worth having side by side at the least. Maybe the Shiraz after as it will be a fair bit heavier.

the lake's cab may be in that hole they tend to go in and may not show well. perhaps go for an 03' or the current vintage an 04'.

The 2001 Lakes Folly Red was drinking magnificently late last year. No problem with it. Not sure why LF go on about this hole thing...odd.

OK guys,

another "smashing" success for icon lunch number 2.. Another spanish restaurant with great tapas food. This style helps us keep food coming out whilst we have the 3 bottles. For 3 people, ordering 11 dishes, it cost $119..! What a bargain.

Ok to the wines (which cost considerably more);

Started with 2001 Lakes Folly Cabernet. I found it a tad disappointing and on the weak side. I looked up the vintage ratings over the weekend and the 2001 vintage is rated as 4/10. Made sense. I opened the wine at 9.30am and let it breathe til 12.30pm. When I first opened the wine it smelt fantastic, so I'm not sure if it fell apart or was in the "dull" period now. I had a 99 a few months earlier and the 99 was a much bigger full bodied wine and it was sensational. The 2001 is nice but not as good in my book and whilst a nice wine was not up to it in my view for the price. 6.5/10. Avoid until out of the dull spot (10 years)

Next was the 2001 Howard Park Cabernet Sauvignon. This was better than the Lakes Folly but not a star (as has been written). Was more full bodied than the Lakes Folly and quite drinkable now, I think this needs at least 5 years to be tried. Not convinced but i don't seem to like WA Cab's. Next month will be interesting as we are having the Cullen Di Madeline.. Anyway, 7.5 as a rating based on the fact we got a bottle for $55 from Dan Murphys.. Will be better with time is my suggestion.

Finished with 2004 Jasper Hill Georgia's paddock. What a wine. Hands down the best of the day and we rated it as the best of the icon lunches to date. I was never a fan of Vic Shiraz until tasting this and Heathcote Estate. I tried the 98 Jasper Hill and now this one and you can just tell it is of very high quality. It is not a big wine but it not small either. It is just a great tasting wine that has great length and a smooth mouthfeel. 9/10.

In a way yes, but maybe it's a learning exercise and to share good wines with good friends and good food, learning along the way is a great way to enjoy wine.

It all comes down to the definition of work... "Nope" would be my first answer.

I always find it helps to have a "designated worker" for the afternoon.

We had the 2003 Cullen Diane Madeline and 2001 Magnum of Rockfords Basket press shiraz.

I think the 2003 Cullen Cab Sauv Merlot was a victim of cork taint. It had a mildew smell and I'm sure was not reflective of how good this wine is. Unfortunately I don't think we had the Diane at its best..

The 2001 Basket Press was brilliant. First magnum I have ever drank wine from, we took over the pouring duties from the waitress (her eyes nearly popped out of her head when she tried holding the bottle to pour). We believe it has knocked the Jasper Hill of its perch as the best wine we've had at an icon lunch.. We opened it at the restaurant and in my view the wine was better halfway through (after breathing a little). Still has 10+ years to go. Grab em if you can.
