Friday Quiz

Post by Quizmaster »

Something a little different today. I’m going to provide some information about a bottle, from the label. Tell me what it, is including vintage. You can ask questions, BUT only ONE question each. Good luck.

“Grape variety Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon harvested at 16 baume and fortified with Brandy Spirit. Matured in 500 gallon oak casks for 2 years Bottled May … For maximum enjoyment store this bottle by laying down in a cool place. It will continue to improve with maturation in the bottle for many years. Bottle No 13588”

“An outstanding award winning vintage …”

Okay, I will bite.

Is the maker Tyrrell's and the grape variety Shiraz?

Actually Adair, that's two questions, but because I'm feeling generous, and you could have been much more pointed with your question  - the maker is not Tyrrell's and one of the varieties is Shiraz

No, it's not Tahbilk. Ok you lot, I'm hung to the bejesus, bloody big night, so I figured this would be over in about 5 minutes by allowing you to ask any question, which is why I restricted it to just one. Ask me something more general - Please :)

I could find nothing with Shiraz from SA on the seppelt website.

Yes, I discarded looking at Para for that reason, as well as any of the other Tawnies.

Sounds like you could be on the right track Anthony ...

I'd guess the 1998 Hardys Vintage Port (the "award winning vintage" blurb sounds a little familiar).

Cheers,
Ian

Award winning vintage - how about the 1975 Hardys Vintage Port - from memory came in fancy box with such a slogan on it.

Not those eh...

The (high) bottle number for a fortified could be a clue.

How about Stonyfell Metala (Black Label) Vintage Port (Shiraz Cabernet) for another complete stab in the dark?

Haven't a clue what vintage though (not that it probably matters).

Cheers,
Ian

Did they make that much of any of the Thoroughbred Series?

Let me re-phrase that, is it a Vintage Port from the Yalumba Thoroughbred Series?

Checking up I've got a 1972 which has almost identical wording on the label except for the April bottling date and 15.5 Baume figure.

It's definitely the Metala Cabernet Shiraz VP - I'll have a stab at 1971.

Finally, the right question, AND the correct answer. Yes, it’s the 1971 Stonyfell Metala Vintage Port.

Outstanding by the way, had it at the end of a long night a week or so back. Only got through half of it on the night, yes, it shouldn’t have been opened, discovered it 5 days later and it was still great. This will live for another 35 years!

Not sure if I’ll be around for next weeks quiz, and definitely won’t be able to do it the week after that.
