One of very few greats in an industry awash with johnny-come-lately's and prima donnas. He always had time to talk to his customers and his annual newletter was never dull nor boring, forever prodding the status quo of his industry, politics or whatever got up his nose. Since the late 70's he has been the quiet achiever, but somehow has stood out from the crowd. Above all, he never waivered from his belief in particular wine styles, standing firm in the face of constant change and pressure to change. The loyalty of his numerous customers over many decades is indicative of the person that will always be John Middleton.
Cheers,

CR

I am truly saddened by this news. He was one of the greatest and nicest blokes in the industry, he was intimidated by no-one, did not suffer fools lightly and called it as he saw it. A genuine loss. I will remember him fondly, and the annual pilgrimage to Coldstream West Road each year will be somewhat hollow henceforth. I think I will crack an old Quintet tonight in his honour.

A great loss for the Australian wine industry. I have been visiting his cellar door in Coldstream since 1998, and always enjoyed his humour and strong views on the wine industry. I opened a bottle of 1997 Pinot Noir tonight In Memorium - simply stunning pinot, with years ahead of it. A fitting tribute.

To the family, friends, and wider wine community of Dr John Middleton. A truly unique individual, and an icon as a result.
Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.

Very sad news indeed. I unfortunately never visited the winery but I always looked forward to the thoughts and ramblings of the annual newsletter. A man with opinions, that's for sure.

Be very interesting to see what happens to the winery now. Hopefully someone with thesame vision will continue to steer the ship.

My thought go out to the family, friends and employees.
Cheers,
Kris
