Friday Quiz

Post by Quizmaster »

Today’s quiz should be quick?

You have been given beverage responsibility for the upcoming Bastille Day diner; naturally the wines served will originate from France. It is a large function and the following have been sourced:

i) From Champagne: 12 Magnums, 3 Jéroboams, 6 Rehoboams, 2 Methusalehs, 4 Salmanazars/Shalmanesers, 5 Balthazars, 3 Nebuchadnezzars, 3 Melchiors

ii) From Bordeaux: 8 Magnums, 6 Marie-Jeannes, 10 Double Magnums, 5 Jéroboams, 5 Impériales, 3 Balthazars, 2 Nebuchadnezzars, 2 Melchiors

iii) From Burgundy: 6 Magnums, 6 Jéroboams, 2 Rehoboams, 3 Methusalehs, 2 Salmanazars/Shalmanesers, 4 Balthazars, 2 Nebuchadnezzars, 3 Melchiors

iv) From Rhone: 4 Magnums, 3 Jéroboams, 6 Rehoboams, 4 Methusalehs, 2 Salmanazars/Shalmanesers, 2 Balthazars, 4 Nebuchadnezzars, 1 Melchior

How many equivalent 750ml bottles of the above will be available for the function?

How did you end up with an odd number of bottles for Champagne and Bordeaux AJ? Shouldn't they all end up as even numbers?

Good point ... number changed. Although I suppose you could end up with an odd total for Bordeaux if there were an odd number of Marie Jeannes!

Some dinner!!!

My real answer as to how many would be "available for the function" is none, as I would most likely load up a truck and do a runner :D . That's assuming I knew something about French wine - which I do not  .

After doing some research, I just realised that a Jéroboam in Bordeaux is a different size than the other 3 regions.  So my updated answer is:

1,148 standard 750ml bottles made up of:

348 Champagne
280 Bordeaux
272 Burgundy
248 Rhone

Agree with Dipso and MM.

Don't have my research books to hand, but I thought there was one large format bottle equivalent to 9 regular bottles? Which would make an odd number a possibility...

The answer is 1,148. Well done Dipso for the first to get it, and also to everyone else who got it.

The only tricky aspect of the question related to a Jeroboam, which in Champagne, Burgundy and Rhone holds 3 litres, while in Bordeaux it’s a 4.5 litre bottle. (Those Frenchies – in Bordeaux a 3 litre bottle is simply a double magnum!)

Greame, to the best of my knowledge there is no 9 x 750ml bottle equivalent, you may be thinking of a Shalmaneser which is a 9 litre bottle?

The only way there could have been an odd number of bottles was if there was an odd number of the Bordeaux Marie Jeanne’s, which are equivalent to 3 750ml bottles.

Till next Friday ……….

Sorry to lodge a protest Quizmaster, but you will note that Dipso and I arrived at our 1148 via different numbers. Can you adjudicate on the breakdown please?

Michael

PS Not competitive (unless there is a prize!), just curious.

Thanks, David. My humblest apologies. The different order threw me. Question withdrawn  .
