NWR: Music downloads

Hi Good Peoples,

Does anyone here download music to their computer? If so which site or sites do you recommend and why?

www.allofmp3.com - The have a good selection of Bert Bacharach and Andy Williams for you.
You just pay for bandwidth and download a client (optional).
Is about $1 per CD... the free peer to peer is a bit risky IMO

I joined up with the one offered through ninemsn, back before iTunes arrived and they put up their prices to match :evil:

The site is run from a UK based provider, loads pages as fast as continental drift, and I have had a couple of dud downloads (ie: corrupted and unplayable). The content is largely Top 40, without a lot of depth, and they have listings for songs that they don't have licences for (which means you can't actually buy those songs from them).
I did get a refund on a dodgy download after I raised the issue, but the best advice they could offer was "Don't try to download that particular song again."
Not recommended.

The cheapest commercial site I have seen is http://www.emusic.com, but it is based in the USA and is subscription only (ie: you pay a set minimum per month which allows a certain amount of songs per month)

Check out http://www.destramusic.com.au to see if it suits your needs.

http://www.mp3.com.au has a bunch of free downloads, but you will have to sort a lot of chaff to get to what you might like.

Or there are the P2P file sharing programs, but I have not tried them out (and probably never will - I don't trust 'em!)

torb go to limewire.com download the program (its free) and then you can download as much music as you want free of charge, not that i condone such actions.

If you're not interested in legality, and you're willing to apply some effort to setting it up correctly, and you've a decent (>= 512kb/s) connection, and you leave your computer on 24/7, then you can't go past eMule.

I would second Limewire. Has a huge variety and downloads are quite quick.
Everything from Jazz to Classics.

I use several: eMule, limewire, bittorrent, kazaa K-Lite (only now for old stuff as too much junk for new releases) - I also dont condone illegal sites :wink:
