Thought I should (belatedly) introduce myself after making two lengthy posts already (woo-hoo - 2 posts!)
Mid (alright late) 30's with a wine collection stretching back to my pre-child/pre-wife/pre-mortage days in my early 20's. Only around 40-50 cases but then I don't drink that much wine - certainly not as much as I'd like to!

More than half that and id be talking about POST wife days, not pre wife days
I suppose cause I'd been talking to some house designers about plans for our new house. When I mentioned I wanted a storage room suitable for wine and mentioned how much wine we his comment was "is that all - I've got clients with 2 or 3 times that". Certainly put me in my place.
Most of my better wines (707, JR, 389 etc) were from when I had plenty of money (i.e. pre-wife/kids/mortgage). Lately I've been buying more realistic priced wines - $20 or less, and trying to get the wife into red wine. She actually has a good tongue which means she only likes the good stuff and only really enjoys the really really good stuff (read my post about the 93 389).
I was also lucky enough to pick up a stack of cases of 407,128 and 28 when Penfolds changed from 12 case to 6 case. The idiot wine club had advertised them by the case but hadn't indicated they were 6 only (they put specific flags beside all the other 6 packs). Hence when I ordered a heap they ended up selling them to me at half price (was a long fight through 3 levels of management but worth it in the end

You sound just like me. Before we had kids and an auckland mortgage, and when it was heaps cheaper, we bought piles of aussie super premium stuff - amargh, john riddoch, edelstone, eileen hardy, HOG, Grange, 707 etc Not any more
Its still sitting there - drink a bottle here and there but dont splash out on that type of wine often anymore - buy piles of rielsing where you can grab a top one for $25
I have sat on 25 dozen for the last 7 or 8 years. Its a level that works for me, I chew through about 120 bottles a year - mostly riesling and general replace at the rate I drink.
I also have friends with just a few dozen and they enjoy the hobby just as much. Wine can be a hobby not only for the well healed with obsessive disorders, superiority complexes, walk socks and roman sandles
