I am starting to get very interested in the ageing potential of Australian Whites and would be interested to see if anybody is trying some of the older whites in their cellar.

Some that I can remember off the top of my head.

1970 Lindemans Hunter Chablis (Semillon)
1971 Lindemans Hunter White Burgundy (Semillon)
1979 Leo Buring Watervale Riesling
1974 Tulloch Dry White (Semillon)

PLus a couple of stickies
1974 Lindemans Hunter Porphry
1978 Lindemans Hunter Porphry

Mine 1970 Lindemans White Burgundy (hunter Semillon), the difference between this wine and the Chablis above is unknown to me.

Last enjoyed last year, large bottle variation, the best were outstanding.

67 Lindeman's Hunter River Riesling (Semillon, of course, and I can't remember the exact bin no. - 6745, I think?)

Also -

Lindeman's 70 Chablis, Riesling (the 70 Chablis remains the greatest Australian Semillon I've tried)

Buring Riesling - 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, 75, 78, 79 (mostly show reserves but all fantastic notwithstanding some bottle variation)

'86 Mount Pleasant Semillon: Had it over a year ago so I don't really remember any details but I do remember it was still quite drinkable and had that nutty character that aged Hunter Semillon gets. I've still got some '93 and '95 left that will go a few more years.

Bit hard to pin down, this one. It was at the first WLDG Sydney offline in 2000, and Ted brought a 1968 Lindemans HR Semillon which he'd picked up as a 'cleanskin' from Lindemans when they closed their Sydney warehouse. So, no Bin number to aid in identification.

The wine was clearly drying out - there wasn't much fruit left. Best 10 years before, I think...

1965 Wynns Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon out of a magnum. Was a present from Sue Hodder when my twin brother got hitched.
So holding up wonderfully well (magnum format probably helped) and was a great old bottle.

Well it would have to be an old liqueur muscat. Doesn't the Chambers Rosewood 'Old Rare' (or whatever it is called these days) have wine that is over 100 years old in the blend?

From vintage bottles -
1951 Sepelts Pinnacle Selection Amontillado Sherry
1959 Penfolds Grange - just a sip. It smelt much better than it tasted.
1967 McWilliams Mt Pleasant 'Anne' 'Traminer Riesling'.

Mine was a 79 Leo Buring Riesling, drunk in about 1992. One of the DW series, but cant remember which one,. Amazingly fresh and varietal, just outstanding at this time. After that its old hunter sems, 81, 83, 84 Elizabeth drunk in the last few years. All on their last legs, lost their acid but reasonable drinks still.

It would have to be a 1972 Leo Buring Eden Valley Show Riesling. Was a bit worried as the level was down a fair way (wouldn't happen under stelvin!!) but wine was very good.

Interesting to read in the Melbourne Age (4 Nov) that Huon Hooke bought a bottle of the 1984 Lovedale Semillon when passing by the McWilliams Mt Pleasant winery a while ago. It's great that they have these old wines still for sale. That's how come I was able to pick up the 'Anne' that I mentioned above, though it was a while back.

1970 Lindemans Hunter River Chablis, White Burgundy - I seem to recall there may have been some variations in when the grapes were picked but who knows - at 30 years old the good bottles were absolutely fantastic - fresh long balanced and kept opening up in the glass (or so claimed the person who left some in the glass to the end of dinner)

1973 Leo Buring Rieslings - did John Vickery have divine assistance in 73? Had the Watervale, Eden Valley and a Spatlese. Oh to have had the funds to buy every bottle ever seen

Some of these are probably the best wines ever made in Aus but then I've never tried a 60A
