9 hour luxury dinner marathon with Rossi including 98Grange

Post by Craig(NZ) »

No one could accuse us of eating like Ethiopians or Bangledeshi's for that matter last night.

Always a stunning occassion when Ross and I get together, way too laid back. The food was sensational as usual and never stopped appearing - great platters, roast lamb, coffee and the works.

Starting off with the legendary Neudorf Moutere Chardonnay from the 2001 vintage. Consistant notes with the last occassion, rampant nose of lime maralade on toast with a hint of sweet clay and road gravel. Palate of toffee, nectarine, figs, grapefruit and citrus. drinking well now. Not the most enormous vintage of this label but so so stylish, all breed. 100 points, maybe more.

1996 Leasingham Classic Clare Shiraz was in good touch, though Ross had dipped into it earlier and it was showing just slight confusion from a bit too much air contact. Still a wine of that size still rocks along, plenty of dark chocolatey fruit and soft broad structure. 92 points

1998 Te Awa Farm Boundary Merlot was more our scene. Lovely rich merlot, but not blowsey or over ripe. lovely dusty tannins coat the mouth and bring focus to a very juicy dark fruited wine. Shows the genius of the vintage and class with effortless ease. 97 points

1995 Penfolds Bin 389. A stunning 389 from what on paper must be a under rated year. Glorious rich multi dimensional palate showing confection notes, more serious dark blackberry tones and a milk chocolate type sweetness. Lovely powdery tannin structure. Less interlectual than the boundary but in front of the rugby maybe a better fit? 98 points

Then we moved on to the iconic 1998 Penfolds Grange. However it was only aussie shiraz, and id had enough to drink at that stage and we were busy watching rugby and farting.

An interesting read Craig. I think the correct kiwi term for some of the phrases there would be 'random'.

Happy 35th Birthday. Certainly sounds like you celebrated in style.

Twas The Charred Garlic to Blame..

Post by Rossi »

we were busy watching rugby and farting.

Nuff said bout that, but you get(smell) our drift!!
Great Day/Night way to celebrate the rolling of the stone..and yes. ironic that the old buggers are strutting it at Western Springs Stadium tonite!!
Love em, but wouldnt pay the price to see the Stones now..havent really liked their last aprox 20 years worth to be honest..seriously though..that bloody Moutere Charddie is just SOO fricken good, words fail me.. cooked butterflied prawns, lovely french cheese Craig & Mel brought with them, smoked spanish onions and olives, fig and olive salsa, stuffed chipotle peppers, wicked salami, and I blamed the wind on the charred garlic!!
Only low point of the evening was watching the Warriors do what they do best..dominate a bloody game, then let it slip with 4 minutes to go!!
The Boundary and the 389 Craig brought as well, was a treat..Only had the 99 Boundary before, and the 98 snotted it easy..great wine, great vintage..and god if 95 wasnt a paticulary good Aus vintage, well, it says a lot for the Pennies winemaking team..stupendous wine, and I have a 96 and a 98 left, but wont be imbibing for some years..Anyway..Happy Easter to all the forum, and i'm off to pour the rest of the 98 Grange down my golden sink

Wow!!
98 points for the 1995 Bin 389!!!!!
I assume this is out of a total of 100 points, which doesn't leave a lot of room for the 1928 Latour or the 1978 DRC La Tache!!

Still, each to his own.

No, this week im scoring out of 110 points just for fun as I decided I need to drink more 95-100 point wines, and really it is a cheap way to do it.

Still details which of the set of wines, on that particular day out of those bottles, and in that company, with that certain food..... etc... that I preferred. Basically that can be the only purpose of scoring - relative ratings according to my individual palate

No need to calibrate with Parker or Winespectator or Oliver is there? - No one has exactly the same palate as anyone else on the planet anyway, as such universal scoring systems of any nature are flawed.

Yeah but the '95 389 was in fact bl**dy good, scoring it this way makes it a 98 Grange 8)
