Some discounted wines - opinions please?

Post by Daryl Douglas »

The barn's new catalogue has some wines that I'm interested in at prices 15-20% or so below rrp so would appreciate some opinions on the wines and their qpr at the prices advertised. I hope Gavin doesn't mind but these are wines that mostly don't seem to be available from Auswine and more affordable for me than most wines stocked by Auswine.

Saltram Metala White Label Shiraz Cab. 2002 $12.95 (got a bottle to try)

Penley Estate Phoenix Cab 2003 $15.95

Seppelt Victorian Shiraz 2003 $12.95 (tried it, like it, to me good qpr?)

Hardy's Oomoo Shiraz 2004 $11.95

D'Arenberg The Custodian Grenache 2002 $14.95

Thorn Clarke Shotfire Ridge Shiraz 2004 $16.95

Saltram Mamre Brook Cab. 2003 $17.95

Voyager Estate Shiraz 2004 $22.95

D'Arenberg High Trellis Cab. 2004 $15.95

Heathcoate Mail Coach Shiraz 2002 $21.95

I fear that Coles moves in and takes over many of these types of specials will disappear. 6packs of Beck's pilsener with a bonus glass, for the same price as VB, or Pilsener Urqell for $2 more is a no-contest situation for the ilk of VB.

Saltram Metala White Label Shiraz Cab. 2002 $12.95 (got a bottle to try)

Excellent VFM wine.

Seppelt Victorian Shiraz 2003 $12.95 (tried it, like it, to me good qpr?)

Likewise

Thorn Clarke Shotfire Ridge Shiraz 2004 $16.95

Crowd pleasing fruit bomb but did not yank my chain, prefer the Metala and the Voyager

Saltram Mamre Brook Cab. 2003 $17.95

Not as good as the 02 or 04

Voyager Estate Shiraz 2004 $22.95

Superb vfm

Thanks Davo

I've now tried the White Label and yes it is excellent vfm. It's a nicely balanced, well-made wine though it's the cab component that makes it for me with with a touch of stalky greenness and fine drying tannins on the finish.

Glad you agree that the Seppelt Vic 03 is too, but then doesn't everyone? Early reports though seem to reckon the 04 is even better. Have a magnum(gratis from an in-store tasting) that'll be consumed after my 37yo niece's graduation on Friday night. She loves being a social worker  . Have couple of 750ml bottles already but will probably get some more - plus another 28btl wine cabinet as the other two are full and I've already a case of wine that needs better storage.

I've a few bottles of the Mamre Brook cab 03 I've not tried yet so will wait for the 04 before getting more. Tried the 02 shiraz a year or so ago and it was very nice but most of the accolades seemed to be for the cab. But I was marooned in Mackay with a broken ankle, at my sister's place and her husband likes shiraz.

The Shotfire Ridge was on the radar for a couple of keepers because of the makers'/label's reputation but now will maybe only get a bottle to try it.

Voyager has established a great reputation so on your recommendation I'll at least get a bottle to try. If excellent shiraz can be made in Mt Barker so why not Margaret River?

Those you didn't mention I assume you've not tasted or aren't worthy of consideration. Was a bit surprised you didn't include the Oomoo because the reactions I've seen to this wine are usually very positive with relatively few detractors. Must admit to having tasted, I think the 1st and 3rd vintages of Oomoo, neither of which I liked much as they just weren't to my palate so it's off the tasting list - not my style. I had a couple of bottles of Penley Phoenix 01 that I didn't really enjoy though have seen some positive reports (incl Ric?) recently though not sure of the vintage so it's another possible taster.

Cheers and thanks again Davo

Daz,

I missed the Voyager on your list, here is my TN

Voyager Estate 2004 Shiraz sells for $29.50 at cellar door. The wine was matured in 80% French oak, 40% of the oak was new. Loads of silky, dusty tannins and distinct, deep fruit combine to form a well-balanced, solid and tight wine that is ample-weight and already showing signs of harmony which is further enhanced by the mouth feel. Red and blue berry fruit spectrum flavours with tobacco leaf finish with good length. A credible wine that is approachable now but it will improve as it matures over the next five years or so; itÂ’s rated as Highly Recommended with *** for value.

**** for vale, getting close to ***** at your price and a bloody good buy.

Penley Estate 2003 Phoenix SAMay05 sells for $19.95 at cellar door. This Cabernet is way too young to enjoy and the fruit is currently buried by youthful, crisp acid and fine, smooth, drying tannins. The bouquet shows spice, smoky oak, dusty notes, a touch of leaf, and sweet berry fruit. Red and blue berry fruit together with milk chocolate finishes with reasonable length and persistence. Ample-weight, with a firm consistency and solid structure this needs at least three years to come together. Rated as Recommended with **** for value.

Getting very close to ***** at $16.

The Mail Coach would be ****.
Cheers

Darryl,

I will second the Mail Coach. I have had it numerous times and enjoyed each bottle.

With regards to the Oomoo, I picked up a case or two for the old man for just over $9 pb and at that price think its great value.

Cheers

Appreciate the advice guys.

Looks like the Phoenix, Voyager, Mail Coach and Metala are on my "buy" list.

And Ric, the TN's are great, as always.

Cheers
