Preservative Free Wines

Post by Finney »

Hi there,

My mother has become allergic to sulphides and therefore cannot drink most wines. She has always loved good wine but trying to find preservative free wines let alone good ones is a real problem. Can anyone give me the name of some reasonable wines and purchase locations?

Thanks in advance

Preservative free wines are a misnomer.
All yeast produce some SO2, and you can quite legally use a high SO2 producing yeast and stick a No added sulphites added sticker on it.

probably have more SO2 than your average red.

My suggestion..for the sulphite insensitive

Avoid bag in the box
Avoid old world wines (especially sweet whites)..Alsatian wines get me every time!
avoid White
Drink Aussie red.

Cheers

Hi Smithy,

She has to avoid the sulphides not only in wine but in all food and actually causes severe allergic reaction - Tongue swelling, trouble breathing, trip to hospital etc. Mum does drink the Hardy's preservative free wine sparingly, but I will say no more about the TN's for this wine. She has always thoroughly enjoyed nice wine but certainly looks at Dad, Julie and I with envy, as we enjoy wine from his collection or mine.

Can anyone suggest any?

Thanks

Craig,

Pity its your mom and not your mother-out-law.

Happs have a couple but I have not tried them.

Craig,

One preservative free red that springs to mind is made by Botobolar in Mudgee. They currently have a 2005 preservative free shiraz available.

You can check it out at http://organicwine.com.au/Wines.aspx?NI ... 276&Mode=2

I haven't had any of their wines recently but in the past they have been very drinkable.

Cheers,

Oooooops

That Botobolar 2005 preservative free wine is a a blend of Pinot Noir grapes from Botobolar and Merlot grapes from 'Pig in the House' Organic Vineyard in Canowindra.

LOL, that was great thanks Ric!!!! :D :D :D Funnily enough, I have the outlaw here for a few days and she got a good laugh as well!!!! It's ok, I didn't tell her where she can find u!!! :D :D :D

Thanks for the other possibilities all. If anyone has any others send them through as I wouldn't mind trying to find something that mum would enjoy.
