"Prestige" wines under screwcap

Post by manning »

I just bought some 03 Cullen Diane Madeleine for the cellar - a wine which could rightly be termed a "prestige" wine - and noted with interest that it is under screwcap.

What other upper-end (say AU$50+) have made the switch? I heard that HOG was switching to some sort of non-cork enclosure, but haven't seen it yet.

I also note that Henschke saw fit to reproduce Tyson's article on oxygen ingress via cork/screwcap on their website. Interesting.

The only two I can come up with at the moment are Grosset and Howard Park. I'm not sure about Tim Adams and his Aberfeldy, though I know he's been thinking about it.

50% of the Penfolds 2004 Bin 60A & Block 42 under ROTE for starters,

Henschke are going screw for a portion of most of their range - they're evaluating the glass stopper for the HOG,

O'Leary Walker use ROTE for the Clair,

Woodstock are switching to 100% ROTE for the 2004 Stocks (would have done it sooner except for the problems getting suitable long bottles made),

2001 Elderton Command under ROTE,

2002 Kay Bros Block 6 ...

If I can get away from this work desk I'm sure I can come up with a few more.

Cheers,
Ian

Not sure if it fits Manning's "upper-end" definition, but just noticed that the 2002 St Hugo Cabernet release is under stelvin. :D

However, not sure if this is indicative of the whole production or just a percentage?

Interestingly, Michel Laroche bottled all their 2002 Chablis for the Australian market under screwcap, including their Grand Crus which retail for $130+. Other markets got cork I believe.

In my recent junkmail it was advertised as a VC exclusive (like the 2002 Saltram No.1 - there's another one!) so it's a %age.

Yeah I saw that "Exclusive" on the Saltram No 1... A bit like the New Idea and its "exclusive" photos of the new Danish Prince.

Wonder if Gavin's handed his stock back yet.
