As a big (closet ) swannies fan i will be watching the game this weekend. Ive been trying to decide what wines to have whilst watching the game on the Plasma . On the basis that 96 was their last final, Ive finally decided:
- Coopers sparkling ale (to start)
- 96 Wynns BL (Cab Sav)
- 96 389
- 96 Mitchelton Print
- 96 Lakes Folly Cab
& to celebrate the win... some 96 Dom.
edited: Decided to add some Eagles Blood Shiraz 2002 from Whistling Eagle. Very apt i feel!
(to compliment these wines an assortment of cheese, breads, cold meats and antipasto will be served. Have got some fantastic cheese from a fairly new Dairy/cheese shop in the Hunter called "Binnorie Dairy")
What will you be drinking when the swans bring the flag home?!
I'll be interested to see how the 96 Print shows up, I thought it was maturing pretty quickly a couple of years back and sold mine off. It could just be the box I got, but the local rep muttered something about "96 is an early-drinker" when I asked him at a tasting around the release of the 98.

Actually have some notes from a vertical lakes tasting at the winery with Rodney Kempe. Vintages 98-04 (& 05 barrelsamples) in the cab; & 99-02, 04 (05 barrel samples) of the chardonnay. These were matched with some finger food & must say a great 2.5 hrs in the vat room of lakes folly. My wife being 6.5mths pregnant with our second child was designated driver so i had to finish the rest of her wines! Yeah no spitting that day, but i have to admit i did get a little tipsy.
will dig them up, as im yet again procrastinating from my assignments.

Forgot to mention: the 98 is a cracker & i re-tried the 2000 cab since i bought it on release & it confirms my opinion that it is the best lakes ive ever had even at this young age, with at least 12-15 years ahead of it.
good/bad news for those with 99 chardys they need to be drunk soon (within the next year) as they are just superb drinking now & no need to wait as they will not improve any further. Luckily summer is around the corner.

I tried the '96 LF a couple of months ago and was very underwhelmed. Am hoping it's in a transitional phase, between youthful exuberance and full maturity.

That's what I mean about knowing when to start in on them. They are very much an early drinker or then let them sit for 8-10 years. In the inbetween stage they are fairly ordinary. The 94s are just opening up now so I am very much wondering whether the 96 will be ready for this event and your tasting confirms that.

Actually Rodney Kempe commented how they had to re-evaluate the wines a few years back when he took over using a 100 pt scale, to over come these 12/10 marks!

i know what you mean and was going to include a 94 reserve instead, but will take a punt on the 96 (in keeping with the theme). ive got another 5 so i'll sacrafice one for the cause. Perhaps an extra long decant may help...or not.
I do believe the last time that the Swans won a grand final was in 1933 is that right? If so, I remember seeing some 1933 Para Port in the local bottlo a while ago, might have to see if it's still there. Anyone else have anything from 1933 that would be worth cracking, Danny?

139 years of history with 16 Premierships and only 2 wooden spoons is a pretty fair effort in my book. Sooner or later we were going to get another one!

Hmmm, I think it will be the Rockford Basket Press 2002. Thats because I will be drinking it in 2015, when the Swans might win a premiership because it aint going to be this year!!

You are correct. It seems like an age since I made that statement, just after the Blues won the Preseason Premiership if I recall. Lucky for me we didn't have a bottle of John Riddock on it like last year! Is Fox broadcasting the game live into the US as they have done in previous years? Should be a very late Friday night, early Saturday morning for you!!
Anyway, will probably open some 90 something pointer Cabernet from Margaret River as that will be the margin the Coasters will win by. But seriously, I hope it is a close, hard fought and enjoyable to watch Grand Final .... not like the last 2 years.
