Just had a bottle of 2003 Penley Estate "Phoenix" Cabernet Sauvignon, purchased for $15.90. Thought it excellent "bang for the buck", smooth, balanced, went down very well with dinner. Has anyone else tried this wine?

Cheers, Staybaker. :)

Meerea Park 03 Shiraz Viognier is outstanding- and realistic pricing for Hunter reds :D

2002 Balgownie Shiraz - at about $25, IMHO a distinguished mature vineyard, that has proven itself along time ago, that is once again producing exceptional wines.
In 5 years time it will be drinking like a $50 wine, and in ten it will be blis.. so underrated.

Glad to see I'm not the only one that wasn't fussed with the Musician, and like you I'm also a big fan of Majella. I guess I was expecting something close to the standard of their cabernet and shiraz, but with less oak. But it's nowhere near that sort of quality! It's a $17 wine that to me tastes like a $17 wine. But the Mamre Brook is a $18 wine, that to me anyway, tastes like something I'd usually have to pay $30 - $40 for.

I agree with this...Had the first of my 6 Musician last night and was quite underwhelmed.
It's certainly a pleasant enough wine but that's it..No real depth or length and a Rosemount type lolly note. Maybe the emotion has replaced reality in the TNs on this wine.
Drink up it's going nowhere.

For me the best values out there in order are

2004 Majella Musician
2004 Pillar Box Red
2004 Kalleske Clarry's Red

All three are very different wines but are a great 'bang for the buck'.

All are pretty new to the market and my need a little more time as I have had some great bottles, and not so great bottles.

Some bottles take longer to settle down.

All are sealed in screw cap which is great to see!

I agree with Chuck on the Gramps 2002 Shiraz and one of the other contributers on the Warrabilla Shiraz/Durif Cleanskin. The Cleanskin at $10 is terrific value. Unfortunately when I went back to them for my third case it had run out. Better luck next time Steve. The Willows 2001-2 Shiraz which can be found under $20 by the case, is also a personal fave.

Allan

cellarclub discount

8)

Guys if we're talking best bang for your buck under $20, I think my Warrabilla Reserves have to be it.
Cellarclub members get 10% off so the $22 Reserves are actually $19.80 for cellarclub.

In the recent NE Vic tasting for Winestate the 04 Reserve shiraz got 5 *
(top) the 04 and 03 Reserve Cab got 4.5* (top) as did the 02 reserve Shiraz....and they wouldn't know a good Durif if they slipped over one in the shower!
