Had a few this week,(best part of winter), Temata Coleraine 2000, blackberrys\fruit,spice,raseberry and the nose and palate,soft fine tannins increasing on the longish finish,not a bad wine.

big upfront in your face bold dark cherries,lichorice,earth,meaty,white pepper nose,softens on the finish,fine to soft powdery tannins, well intergrated even at this young age. good wine

also drank a 86 St Henri,which from memory showed nicely good wine. and a 98 Parker first growth, which drank well.

Is it fair to assume that the Coleraine is very much in primary state? I've got 2, but wasn't planning on touching them for 3-4 years at least.

Noon 2001 Eclipse My second bottle from a six pack; the first was corked but kindly replaced with the same vintage by Drew. The bouquet is wonderfully complex showing meaty aromas, menthol, black and red berry fruits. It's full-bodied and packs a big wallop of flavour that slams the taste buds into submission and then lingers for ages. Meat, aniseed, blackberry, red berry fruits are found on the palate. Smooth tannins with an excellent balance, it is drinking well now, and is hedonistically bloody lovely. With a good bit of meat, it is rated as Excellent with ***** for value, and by itself, because of its hedonism, it would receive the same rating.
Thought I'd try a cabernet from Califronia. Got a Lajota Cabernet Sauvignon 2000 from Napa Valley,
Deep purple,The nose has lots of ripe berries & some vanilla , Big rasberry and black currant up front long and minty finish with smooth oak & a lot of tannin but balanced only con a little too sweet. I can now say I have tasted a californian wine that is very enjoyable, very balanced and worthy of a T/N.

Deep purple,The nose has lots of ripe berries & some vanilla , Big rasberry and black currant up front long and minty finish with smooth oak & a lot of tannin but balanced only con a little too sweet. I can now say I have tasted a californian wine that is very enjoyable, very balanced and worthy of a T/N.

1999 Domaine Serene Evanstadd Reserve Pinot - Oregon
The best pinot I have had this year by far.
Beautiful deep ruby red color, very perfumed nose and the aroma lept out of the glass. Rose petals, red currants, spices and white pepper.
A wonderfully smooth texture that finished with layers of complex fruit driven flavor. It developed enormously throughout the night as more savoury flavours persisted. Bloody pricey, but first class.
Will improve for another few years without doubt and I am rubbing my hands together that I have plenty more.
2002 Evasham Wood Cuvee J Pinot Noir - Oregon
Had this a few nights after the Serene and although clearly a notch below, this was also a wonderful pinot.
Still young and will age gracefully. The flavour was fruit driven with lashings of red berries and plums that finished tightly on the palate.
1996 Wolf Blass Grey Label
At its peak and I think it is time to drink up.
This was a pleasant, easy drinking wine that went perfectly with a slow cooked tomato based rump caserole. I found the shiraz flavours were more dominant than the cabernet (can't recall the split) but the palate was a bit too jammy and sweet for my liking.
1998 St Hallett Old Block Shiraz
This is still a favourite of mine and I think it will peak in another 3 years.
Deep red/black color with no bricking. Nose was full of blackberries with cedar and chocolate. The oak has integrated well and is only mildly noticeable on the back palate with a vanilla aftertaste. Good QPR.
1998 Zema Family Selection Cab Sav
Jet black inpenetrable color and the perfume coming out of the glass was amazing. The nose was explosive. Earthy forest floor aromas with cherries and coffee and cassis. Quite extraordinary.
The palate was still a bit over influenced by the oak and it took a while before the deep cabernet fruit flavors came out. This was a heavy weight wine and will improve for years to come.

It’s been an extremely busy time at work, and it’s a struggle to even think of looking at the computer when I get home. There’s still last week’s Blacktongues notes, the VP night notes, and some impressions from a three-day Barossa trip to come after this lot.
2003 Shaw & Smith Adelaide Hills Merlot: Dark to inky crimson with a bare flash of purple on the outer rim. A sweet, dusty/musky nose of plum, mulberry and chocolate at first, developing some high-pitched peppermint/spearmint characters and milled white pepper with breathing. The mid-weight palate opens with an attack of chalky/olive tannins that run the length of the palate; this wine emphasizes structure first and foremost, with slightly jammy/smoky fruit in the background for now. It’s a real pity this is the last vintage (the vines were ripped out soon after) as it’s a serious Merlot in the style of an Irvine, and not the over-sweet, over-ripe, over-oaked, fast food style that’s so common.
2001 Domaine A Stoney Vineyard Tasmania Cabernet Sauvignon: After telling someone how much I enjoyed the above Merlot this was recommended as a similar “Bordeaux-style” effort. Glass hugging, inky purple/red colour with a glowing purple hue. A beautifully delicate and perfumed nose: earthy, floral, complex, so pure and youthful, featuring blackberries dusted in icing sugar, a hint of iodine, carnation perfume, underlying chalk and mixed spices. The tightly knit palate was equally as impressive featuring complex, savoury characters matched to a powerful, chalky tannin structure; vanilla, mushroom, sweet smoke, ink, mineral/pencil notes and sweet blackcurrant, gaining complexity, sweetness, weight and length with breathing. I opened this after coming back from the three day Barossa trip, and found it to be a bit of a revelation - definitely one for the Cabernet purists!
2002 Mitchelton Parish Shiraz Viognier: Inky red/purple colour. The vine has evolved a little over the last 12 months; there’s no obvious apricot on the bouquet this time, although it still retains the BBQ smoke and tomato sauce/meat pie characters, along with some raisin, licorice and stewed red fruits. The palate was just as ripe as the nose suggests, with ripe blackberry fruit, some pepper/spice mid-palate, finishing with sweet cherries and some alcohol heat. With extended breathing the wine becomes even riper and unbalanced, with chocolate/coffee and porty characters on the nose, coconut, jammy fruit and Vegemite on the palate, and finishing with those harsh, sharp Viognier tannins. I’m not sure where this one is going, but at the moment it doesn’t look promising.

Dark purple, very clean and bright. Blackcurrent and leafy aromas. chocolate and sweet dark fruit with subtle well intergrated oak leading into long dry tannins at the finish. Quite an elegent wine.Have always been a bit disappointed with these wines, but this vintage was very enjoyable.

Lovely rich aromas of blackberries , vanilla and earth. These aromas carried through to the pallate with a bit of chocolate and cinnamon thrown in. The wine was nice without being great.

The Noons Eclipse is an underrated wine but not amongst my group where there are many of us who love it with a passion. A great example of how good Grenache/Grenache dominant blend can be.
I'm putting together a vertical Noon Eclipse tasting for Blacktongues next year, 1997 to 2004 and I'm seeing if I can get the 1996 which at that stage wasn't called Eclipse.

Some interesting wines folks. A couple of questions:
Dave B, how was the 97 Tignanello - I have a couple hiding away I've been thinking of drinking recently.
CamW, very interested to hear more on the Tyrrell's tasting, particuarly the Vat 1s. Standout vintages, etc.
TORB and 707, nice one on the eclipse. Don't know why but I've never bothered getting the eclipse until last year. Maybe it's the huge volume of wine lists out at that time of the year and the general cost of everything. Keep hearing good things about it though.
Quiet week for me with only a 98 Hardy's Tintara Cellars Shiraz. Still a dark red purple colour and nice purple fruits on the nose. Initially a bit of bottle stink but gave way to quite nice licorice notes. Somewhat flat though and I wasn't sure if it was very lildly corked or just a bit past it. Still drinking well but certainly didn't have the vibrancy of the 99 Koonunga Hill from last week. Working my way through some of my quaffers that I've had stored away right now.

Highlights - Semillon 04,01,99,97 all very good.
Chardonnay - 00,02 top shelf
Shiraz - 91,98 and 97 a suprise package. Not as keen on 00,01,02,03.

This was one of my bottles. I took it up as a quaffer (so to speak) to have at the end of the evening with pizza.
Gary, A quaffer? Did you get it as a gift or something? It's a $90 bottle of wine. Super Tuscan and all that. Although, maybe in that company...
Thanks for the info on the Tyrrell's too. I saw this tasting advertised only on the wednesday night or I would have been there too, I think. Sounded quite fabulous.
I've had a awful run with Tintara's of this vintage. n4sir was going to bring a 1998 Tintara Grenache to dinner and I advised him to check at home to ensure it wasn't corked. He brought something else to dinner because the Tintara WAS corked!
Steve, this was only the cellars version (the $12 one). I have a few of the normal 98 Tintara shiraz but haven't opened one for a while. I don't think I was exactly overwhelmed with the last one I had although the 96's are quite good. Next time I open one though, I'll have a backup at the ready!

Two of the most memorable wines I had were:
Jasper Hill 1994 Emily's Paddock - to me it is at it's peak and I wouldn't expect anything more from it. Not an overpowering wine, but more in the subtle aromas and fine long finish.
Leasingham Bin 61 1998 shiraz - drinking fantastic right now. Very earthy and leathery. Reminds me of McClaren Vale wines.

I've had a few of these recently and thought they are peaking so I'm drinking up. I've got a couple of magnums which I'll keep a little longer. The 1999 version I had still looks as if it has a way to go however.
