TN: 2001 Leconfield Cabernet Sauvignon

Post by Adair »

2001 Leconfield Cabernet Sauvignon

Pure blackcurrent of good depth, a little cigar and tomato leaf nuances. Smooth front that builds well in the mouth in terms of breath and depth but never reaches the depth or intensity expected of a high level Coonawarra Cabernet. Well made, harmonious, balanced and enjoyable but nothing special here, especially for its asking price. 16.8/20, 89/100. $30 RRP.

Kind regards,
Adair

Its now down to a $21 wine, which does make it more attractive. How do you think it will cellar Adair?

Hello Guest,

I did not allude to its ageworthiness and only hinted at its structure, which had ample firmness and fineness. I beleive a few years of bottle age would be of benefit, maybe another 4 years would see most improvement. At $21, it could be a good gamble and maybe even worth a bottle or two maximum.

Kind regards,
Adair

How would it compare to 2001 Jamiesons Run {A favourite of mine} at about the same price?

Adair,
I had a 98' Leconfield Cabernet recently after a 98 Neagles rock cabernet. Have 1 of each left. Loved them both, they were so different from each other but both really really nice. The Leconfield reminded me of a '96 John Riddoch I had last year. The Leconfield was really herbacious. If I could get my hands on more tommorow I would. Both on my list of find and aquire.
(I just checked the labels and realise they should be different, the Leconfield Cabernets is a blend of four Cabernets). I paid $28.00 u.s for the Leconfield and $18.00 for the Neagles Rock. Would have been happy if I paid doulble that.
Cheers,
mick.

Keep an eye on Leconfield and Richard Hamilton wines from here on. They engaged talented winemaker Paul "Honeybunny" Gordon from the 2002 vintage and he's having a real impact lifting the quality of both of these brands.

THe 2001s he put together but they were basically fully made by the time he arrived. I saw many of the 2003 from barrel last year and they looked very good.

Pricing has eased in recent times pushing them into the buy category.
