1962 Wines
1962 Wines
Besides Grange and Vintage Port, can anyone suggest some wines from my birthyear that are still drinking nicely today ?
Cheers

good '62s
It was a good year for Sauternes - much better than 61. Sweet whites and dry reds don't always share the same great vintages. Of course, at 40+ years it's going to be a bit of a lottery in any case...
cheers,
Graeme

Any suggestions for brands (besides Ch. D'Quem)

Broadbent recommends .....
From the Great Vintage Wine Book open in front of me
Ch d'Yquem: Last tasted June 1988 *** Drink now to 1995
Ch Climens: Last tasted July 1988 **** Will last well beyond 2000
Ch Suduirat: Not tasted since 1982 **** years of life ahead
Ch Sigalas-Rabaud: Last tasted April 1990 **** Glorious!
Ch Rieussec: ** Light, fragrant but lacking middle
Loire in 1962 was rated a 4-star vintage. Perhpas you'll be able to find a lovely old Sweet Chenin.
Vintage Port was rated a 2-star vintage. Tho' he rates Noval Nacional a 'great' wine ****(*), to last thru to 2050.
Cheers,
Sue

Mark,
Include Penfold's Bin 60A on your 'must buy' list. Regarded by many as the best red ever produced in this country, the only caveat will be the hefty price tag and, like all 40 year old wine, provenance. I last tried this wine in 1992, giving it an almost perfect rating. Subsequent discussions with a wine writer who drank gallons (sic) of the stuff at Penfold's release of the 920 and 90A and a contributor (can't remember who?) to this board suggest the wine is holding well.
Another marque, albeit almost impossible to find, is the Crittenden's Celebration Reserve range of wines. Crittenden, a reputable Melbourne wine merchant, purchased barrels from the top makers of the day (Penfold's, Saltram and Basedow are a few I've seen) and bottled under his own label (and, sensibly) giving credit to the maker and sometimes the vineyard (e.g. Kalimna). The '64 Saltram Cabernet/Shiraz drank superbly this year. I have seen the odd bottle of '62 at auction.
Otherwise, the safest bets must be the better VP producers. Penfold's supposedly made a goodun' from your birthyear.

62 Sauterne
Mark,
The specific wine that prompted my comment was not mentioned by Sue /(Broadbent) - it was Lafaurie-Peyraguey. I gather this chateau began a steady decline in the quality of its output from the late sixties and didn't really pick up again until the 80s.
Certainly the 62 that we had was a glorious wine (my note may still be archived somewhere on WLDG).
cheers,
Graeme
