TN: Glaetzer Malbec/Cabernet 1996

Malbec 56%
Cabernet Sauvignon 44%
65$C
Decanted carefully and drank over 2.5 hours, heavy sediment, three ounces lost.
I found this out of town and thought it interesting enough to buy a couple to take home. I did try several searches for notes on this wine from visiting various forums and simply Googling, I found only three - 1 good, one very good and one poor, all from different stages of development.
Well, obviously tasting is subjective and wine tastes differently over 9 years, but this is my notes from two days ago:
Browning, rosey ridges and deep central mahogany core.
Holy horsey, big barny nose, leather saddle and deep Indian spices, the manure is almost fresh shitty and profuse - somewhat obnoxious at first.
Then I taste it and it's lovingly rich, unctuous, palate-filling and sublime. The finish is also impressive and long lasting with a mature balance of deep fresh baked plum pudding. The tannins were silky, there was a bit of mocha/fig oak and a sweet twang of sweet raspberry emerged in two hours - I found floral near the end too, like a rose just wilting.
This was really nice, if you can work around the horse poo, the palate makes this wine very worth-while.
Cheers,
Mishy

Mishy,

That bottle stink is quite common in Oz wines of that age. Normally if you decat them and leave it for a few hours the stink blows off.

Hi Mishy,

I bought a dozen of this after tasting it when it was released. I remember it was fairly expensive at A$35.

I have been slowly drinking it over the years and have 3 bottles left.

I found the wine to be excellent, quite different from a Shiraz or Cab, due mainly to the high Malbec content (which is why I bought it).

I dont know about the horse poo ! but its a damn fine wine, and Ill open another one in the next couple of days, as it probably needs drinking.

Both of us 'farm-kids' agreed, it was an expressive and poopy old barn.
The fruit can go 5+ years.
