The price of the DM 03 is getting plain ridiculous. Sorry, but $90/bottle??

I paid all up $50/bottle for the 03 Dame de Montrose, and I will guarantee that it will kill the Cullen in 5 years. Pontet Canet 03 was $108 all up, and I am sure comparing that to the DM will be somewhat of a joke.

I have supported Cullens for over 15 years, but I'll pass this year. I just don't think they have the same magical aging capability that good Bordeaux possesses.

$55 for the chardy?? Get serious. Margaret river gone mad, IMO.

It is $81 for the DM by the case...fair enough for Australias best Cab Merlot but it is starting to push it and yes it is making a few 01 Bdx look much better value. The Chardonnay is always excellent though.

Yes. Time to start a European cellar. Go on hollidays once a year to drink very good value French gear.

Yip, switzerland or inbond UK is the go. Also USA prices are good right now with the weak $.

Price of grapes worth nothing and they are putting their prices up at will. What a rip off.None for me!!!

Interesting reactions and consistent with those on other Fora...

Methinks that in a more subdued consumer market this year perhaps we are going to see significant resistence to excessive wine pricing...

Probably a naive question. Is the 2003 vintage something special? I just picked up a 6 pack of the 2000 for $70 a bottle.

as i understand it no!... just another vintage release. (04 is meant to be special)

unfortunately for their loyal followers (see babychick pea post). When will wineries look after their loyal members & not keep thrusting the boot in?!.. im sure not everyone has a limitless budget for wine?

(or maybe its just me who has limits) :shock:

That's why people like drew noon & david anderson (as quirky as their allocations are) who try to be loyal to their long time followers not just the bandwagon passengers, will always have support. Not to metion they make amazing wines. :wink:

Not the cork-sealed bottle of 01 I had at Christmas, prematurely aged, ordinary. Had a very crook (totally, absolutely undrinkable) bottle of Mangan 02 that's still sitting on the bench waiting for me to get around to emailing the winery. Cullen corks seem to be really problematical so the sooner this winery goes 100% screwcap, the better for it's reputation that may also suffer from the price escalations of 10% each vintage over the last 2-3 years. When the wines are good I doubt few, if any, come better from MR though, I must admit.

Point taken on the "best issue" when other more recently reated "icon" wines are asking up to twice the price without the track record of Cullen cab/merl. Can't comment on bordeaux.

I will put my $48 1998 Orlando Jacaranda's Cabernet in front of Cullens $90 Cabernet anytime. I have had the 00 and 01 Cullen and they didnt seem as though they should cost $1 more than the Coonawarra 98.

Prices are too rich for my blood as well. Auction market suggests those kinds of prices are out-of-the-park for new releases as well. (Yes, I know storage is unknown when sourcing at auction, but it's generally a good guide to demand.)

It's interesting how many reputable boutique makers - Grosset, Cullen, Dalwhinnie, Jasper Hill - struggle to do well on the austion market compared to current releases. Practically every vintage of Cullen's C-M, Grosset's Gaia, for example, are available at auction for less than the sell price of the current release. An odd state of affairs. Wonder if they're having any trouble shifting stock?

I see even Mount Mary prices seem to be creeping down to almost meet the mailer.
