TN: Kalleske 'Eduard' Shiraz 2010

Post by Waiters Friend »

G'day

The last (and only) time I have tasted this wine before was at a Grand Cru tasting group about 4 years ago. On that occasion, it was wine of the night (the theme being Shiraz 2016 or older). This was the group note from the night:

Kalleske Eduard 2010 (Barossa Valley, South Australia): Crimson in colour. Christmas pudding, dark plums, dark chocolate, toffee, coconut and rhubarb on the nose. The palate shows soft acid, integrated tannins, and is almost port-like. There’s viscosity which one taster likened to a sticky wine, and it is rich and full with a long finish. Highly regarded by the group.

This bottle is actually darker in colour - a deep purple / black. The nose is warm and powerful, with liquorice, Christmas pudding / brandy spirit, intense blackberry, vanilla and coconut, and coffee grounds. The palate has more liquorice, blue and black berries, mocha /coffee, and caramel / toffee. Acid is soft and a little prickly on entry, and the tannins are fine and integrating well. Some viscosity and texture and a very long finish.

Looking good at 16 years of age. Don't expect huge improvement from here, and this is my last bottle - I'm happy to open it now.

Cheers
Allan

This is a winery that perplexes me at times. Some of their wines are stupendous. But I recently had two bottles from the same six pack of the 2010 Johann George. One was awesome… balanced and linear, whereas the other was super ripe with a bit of alcohol burn on the finish. Both bottles were consumed within 30 mins of one another… how bizarre.
