Michelin Guide Comes to SA!

Post by JamieAdelaide »

This is a great initiative and I hope it encourages more adventurous dining and meticulous understanding of fresh local produce.

I feel Adelaide will underwhelm. Regionally SA will do well.

Any predictions?

Three Hats.

Two Hats.

One Hat.

Bib Gourmand - which I believe will be very prevalent ie: “ Bib Gourmand is a prestigious award by the Michelin Guide that recognizes restaurants offering high-quality food at moderate, budget-friendly prices. It is named after Bibendum, the official Michelin Man mascot.”

Yes, it will be interesting to see who gets a gong.

I must try Currant Shed. Thought process is to sneak a few predicables in before they get too much attention.

The issue here is I’m pretty insistent on BYO.

Any smokies about Adelaide?

Someone must be underwriting this. State government? Some tourist association?

SA Gov is footing the bill. South Aussies are defined by panem et circenses.

“Two things only the people anxiously desire — bread and circuses.”

“The Michelin Group previously proposed a five-year, \(\$40\) million deal to Tourism Australia (starting at \(\$4\) million and scaling to \(\$7.5\) million annually), which was twice declined.”

Love it!

“Venues are being assessed against five universal standards: ingredient quality, technical mastery, flavor harmony, culinary personality, and consistency.”

I would say Vintners and Fermentasian in the Barossa are both top drawer.

After eating at The Currant Shed in McLaren Vale, food wise it’s the equal of the above two.

Cheers

Why only SA? From what I gather it's going to cost but why wouldn't each state kick in or is the Australian Good Food Guide "the thing" for the rest of us?

It's a State based thing apparently. Only SA has signed up (or more accurately stumped up the cash).

Well at least Victoria can’t steal it off of us! They just have to pay for it.

I think it’s positive too and happy to see the tax money spent. Direct flights from the USA and elsewhere bring in some high rollers who want to be guided toward the finer local delights. And SA is cheap compared to abroad.

I remember well a business lunch at Magill Estate a few decades ago. Very impressive restaurant and great wine list. After a very long lunch my guest and I adjourned to the outside deck and quietly slipped into a lovely1982 Penfolds Grange as we watch the sun go down. Properly double decanted and superb stemware. Perfect way to end the day. Those were the days.....
