TN: Ercolani Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano Riserva 2015

Post by Waiters Friend »

G'day

I hosted a twin vertical of this label (along with Poliziano) just under a year ago. The tasting note for this wine from that tasting reads:

Ercolani Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva 2015: Purple colour. Violets, leather, graphite and tobacco on the nose. Savoury palate, with the fruit starting to fall away. There’s vegemite, supporting acid and drying tannins. Medium length and the wine is well into secondary development. Declining.

By any logic, I should have drunk my remaining bottles immediately after. Tonight's bottle, however, is showing much better than last year's and restores my faith a little. Developed, yes, declining, not yet.

The colour has lightened a little but still retains a dark-ish core. Tertiary characters dominate (tobacco, leather, graphite) but there's dark cherry fruits and clove-style spices showing through. And still a touch of vegemite. Tannins have fully integrated, and acid is present but not sharp at all. Some savoury notes on the back palate, and a reasonable length.

Not surprisingly, unlikely to improve, but has held surprisingly.

There's one bottle left. I'll let you know .... sometime :D :)

Cheers
Allan

Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.

I've not tasted any of Ercolani's wines, but a 10 yo VNdM riserva on the decline would be disappointing for sure. This does sound better, but yes it does sound like it's at that point where primary/secondary meets tertiary.
