Mudgee Wineries

[Croquet King]

I'm off to Mudgee for the long weekend and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for cellar doors to visit.

Haven't had any Mudgee wine for a long time and wasn't the biggest fan but that was 25 years ago - I'm sure things have changed.

Maybe after something a bit different rather than competing again the better known regions for my shiraz/ cabernet buying $.

I have heard good things on the Zinfandel from Lowe but am yet to sample it myself.

Last i visited was pre covid, must have been '18 or '19, but Blue Wren's premium wine selection was very nice - when i visited they only had a "reds tasting" menu which didn't include any of their nicer stuff - i had to specifically ask to try them.

Peterson's also was big on my list, i still have a bunch of their '16 and '17 shiraz and cab in my cellar and they're doing very well. Maybe i'm a bit biased but for some reason i enjoy almost everything in the Peterson's selection.

Likewise not tried, but hear good things about Robert Stein Rieslings...

The Robert Stein rieslings are generally pretty sound wines. There used to be a producer named Skimstone that were good at Italian varietals barbera and Sangiovese, and I believe they still exist. The Huntington Estate Reserve reds are quite good on the odd occasion I've tasted those.

Just thought I'd round out this for future reference.

Only visited 4 wineries
Logan Estate - Excellent tasting, a lot of fruit from Orange, overall good quality and the entry level was well made and decent value.
Gilbert - Bad experience. Put us outside and forgot about us. Eventually got a tasting but didn't like any of the wines.
Bunnamagoo - Another excellent tasting experience. Wines ok to decent. Top Chardonnay was good
Small winemakers centre - Good tasting. Good Sparkling Shiraz from Furlough

Lunch at Blue Wren was outstanding. Relaxed with really good food. Great setting.

It was busy over the long weekend but was able to get into where we wanted to.
Cellar doors have been done up and most of them look nice. Certainly there for the wine travel market primarily from Sydney.

Not a region I'd really buy up from although I did pick up a mixed dozen to try later on at home.
A good long weekend away destination.
