If you had to choose between drinking great wine or winning Lotto, which would you choose - Red or White?
Re: August 2024 Purchases
Apologies I meant 2021, although I wouldn’t mind the former year as well.
Ian I was eyeing off the Tyrrells 2023 chardie as well, just haven’t pulled the trigger yet. I reckon it’s a level above ‘quaffer’ though. I am also eyeing off some of the Aldi quaffers highlighted on the Wine Front over the last few days.

Wow $80 these days!
I had a few of my old Grosset PH’s early in the year. 02 & 05 I think? They were lovely. Not so sure of the view by some they don’t age. They have a purity at 20 years that may outshine typical Riesling development. Stelvin accentuating this now. Not sure if that’s the reason for the criticism. What are your views?
Re: August 2024 Purchases
Among a lot of quaffers
6 x Houghton 2017 C.W. Ferguson Franklin River Cabernet Malbec
6 x Yelland and Papps 2021 Greenock Barossa Shiraz. Interesting style in the mould of St Henri - modest oak influence from large used French vats (3,000 litre I think).
6 x Yelland and Papps 2022 Greenock Barossa Shiraz. Ditto above but with 13% ABV. Haven't seen any BV shiraz lately at that low level.
6 x Hardy's 2018 HRB Cabernet Sauvignon. Interesting eclectic blend from Margaret River, Franklin River, Eden Valley and McLaren Vale. Seems to work well.

Bit lost on those HRB 2018 cabs . Got six for quaffing and first bottle seemed to lack freshness and had a suffocated stelvin nuance. Maybe travel shock

I’m happy for people to criticise the aging pattern…. Keeps prices down. These are magnificent wines at 20 years of age under Stelvin. For my tastes I don’t get as much kerosene at that age as I do from those bottled under cork(good thing).
While the $70 ask for members isn’t cheap, I look at LEAS and some of the top semillons, and I can’t complain.

Cracking wine Ed. 2022 version is fantastic. You can really taste the plush cool climate profile, silky rich and smooth. You might not stop at 6

Re: August 2024 Purchases
Clarification. Listed wines were not quaffers. The 13 CW was an exceptional wine. FR does approachable cabernets very well. Malbec also a star there.

Yeah I actually preferred the 22 Shiraz over the 22 BL cab, which I thought was strange, as I thought they were more well known for their cab. Got it from Dan Murphys for approx $20 a bottle, can’t go wrong
Re: August 2024 Purchases
In terms of immediate drinkability, I agree, the 2022 BL Shiraz over the Cabernet for me too.SipAndANibble wrote: ↑Wed Aug 28, 2024 4:57 amYeah I actually preferred the 22 Shiraz over the 22 BL cab, which I thought was strange, as I thought they were more well known for their cab. Craig put a good note on the BL Cabernet recently, definitely good drinkability there too, lovely upfront fruit. The bottle I opened didn't last too long (after a good decant).
If you like the 22 BL Shiraz, the 2021 Sidewood Adelaide Hills Shiraz is a belter, whilst very different regions, the cool climate shiraz profiles are similar, I prefer the Sidewood over the BL shiraz at this point in time, its more 'rounded'.
Re: August 2024 Purchases
Yes its a bee's whisker between the Shiraz and Cabernet.
I purchased another 12 Cabernet this week, through another chuck out deal at TWE...$22 a bottle, so I'll take it.
I will get some more of the Shiraz when it pops up.
I really think both of these wines are the barometer for the region and the vintage, although no doubt there will be some excellent 2022's to come.
Cheers Craig
PS. might have to have a look at the Sidewood, its getting a bit of attention!

Re: August 2024 Purchases
Good tip Matt I will look out for it. Also, I may have spoken too soon as I opened a bottle of 16 BL cab which is very impressive, I think the 22 maybe just needs to sit a while longer.
22 a bottle on the Cabernet is a steal ! I think mine was around 30 for the 22 and 50 for the 16.

Re: August 2024 Purchases
Malcolm, the 2021 Glengyle is a belter. I am not sure of the 2022 Siding, I found it really thin and lacking.
Did an exercise with the lad and opened a Shiraz, Red stripe, Gables and Siding all from 2022. All $11 a bottle.
Shiraz solid and will go the obligatory decade.
Gables needs a little time, but nice mouth feel and will meet the 7-10 year window.
Red stripe, fabulous, rich bright fruits, great mouth feel, lovely lingering palate, the best of the four by a street.
Siding, distant last, will look at it closely tonight to see if my palate is fu*ked, or if it was a crook bottle??
As a comparison, then had the 2022 BL Cabernet, really, a bit cruel my lad said...something about men vs. boys
Cheers Craig

Re: August 2024 Purchases
Last night in my cellar hunting some Barolo. Something wrong with my bookkeeping as I found another case of wine I never new I had. 2004 Bonneau du Matray Burgundy in unopened OWC. Very nice feeling including that in this month’s purchase without outlay! Mature and probably about $500 plus a bottle now. I bought cases in the early 2000’s cause it cheaper than Leeuwin!
