G'day
The team at Myattsfield hasn't made chardonnay as a table wine for a few years now, and it has been our loss. This is different to what was made historically, however. Firstly, It's from Chittering Valley fruit (north east of Perth). One batch was fermented in new French oak, another in a ceramic egg, and a third in stainless steel, before battonage during its maturation. 13.4% alcohol.
Medium yellow in colour, and quite dark for its youthful age. There's ripe peaches, figs, nectarines, white flowers and a little vanilla on the nose, while the palate is refreshing and lively. There's more peach and fig, with some citrus characters underneath (lemon, maybe grapefruit), and traces of vanilla towards the finish. Along with the freshening acidity, there's a degree of leesy texture as well, and there's lots of little things going on here.
Overall, quite well balanced and the wine holds your interest. Possibly not one for the cellar (2-3 years perhaps), but definitely good drinking now.
Cheers
Allan
