TN: Myattsfield Durif 2019

Post by Waiters Friend »

G'day

Myattsfield is a small winery in the Perth Hills. They have a lot of fun with non-mainstream varieties as well as some of the more usual varieties. I believe they have the first plantings of durif in WA. 15.5% alcohol

Deep purple / black, almost opaque and in danger of staining the glass. A big nose - there's lots of ripe dark plums and blackberries, with some vanillan oak, and leather / earthiness in the background. The palate follows through with fruits dominating. Tannins are substantial, grippy and drying, without being overly chunky. Acid is also prominent. A full bodied wine with a long finish.

Durifs are known to be big, bold and potentially unapproachable in their youth. This wine doesn't quite fit that mould - it's very well balanced and not as heavy as the individual elements would indicate, and it holds its alcohol well. One for the longer haul though - this is nowhere near its peak, and will probably go another 5-10 years without difficulty if the fruit holds.

Cheers
Allan

Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.
