TN: La Campagna Chianti Riserva DOCG 2016

From what I can find, I think this Chianti is from north-west of Florence, and not from the Chiani Classico area (while still being part of Tuscany and therefore entitled to use the name 'Chianti'). The 'Riserva' term means the wine has spent a minimum of two years in oak (not new in most cases) and three months in the bottle before release. It should also be entirely, or mostly, Sangiovese (or one of its alternative names). I am happy to be corrected on this information!

2016 was a very good vintage in Tuscany. The wine wasn't decanted, but this glass was poured at least an hour before tasting.

Deep crimson the glass, with a bright ruby rim. Savoury nose with some leather and earth. Sweet maraschino cherry emerged after a swirl or two. There's also some rhubarb, and a hint of mocha.

The palate is fresh and fruity, with acid noticeable on the front of the tongue. Tannins are fine and relatively unobtrusive, while providing a little grip. It's medium bodied only and finishes a little short.

Enjoyable without being overly complex, and unlikely to get much better with more time. Drink now.

Chianti is indeed a pretty large area these days, stretching from Florence/Firenze in the north, to Siena in the south and Pisa in the west.
