RIP Bill Chambers
RIP Bill Chambers
Another great of the Aus wine scenes passed away today, Bill Chambers. Bill took charge of Chambers of Rutherglen in 1956 after the death of his grandfather and in the period that followed Chambers became one of the worlds best fortified wine makers. It’s really hard to forget the incredible taste, texture and complexity of the Rare Muscat and Tokaj wines. Up there as some of the very best wines in Australia - I’ll take a bottle of either before a bottle of Grange.
This is my church, this is where I heal my hurts.

Re: RIP Bill Chambers
Bloody hell - first John Vickery, then Roseworthy class-mate Bill Chambers.
I lived and worked in Rutherglen for 6 years and got to know Bill well. A generous, humble man with a quick wit and warm, engaging intellect. A man of few words and didn't waste any!

Re: RIP Bill Chambers
Very fond memories of Bill and Chambers Rosewood. I spent quite a bit of time in the North East of Victoria in the mid 1970’s through to the early 1980’s. A different era but there were no tasting fees in those days - all wines were set out on a trestle table and you helped yourself through the extensive range. Bill was often in attendance and when he was he entertained with an insight and knowledge of the Victorian wine industry that few had.
There was a story at the time of him escorting the Liquor Control Commissioner from the property when complaints were made about the non-compliance of Rosewood’s tasting facilities.
Pretty sure I still have a bottle of the Rare Muscat in the cellar somewhere, although it was called either Special or Old when I bought it. I’ve always thought that Chamber’s fortifieds were the very best from Rutherglen although I just don’t seem to drink them very often now.
