Wine Porn!

Post by Con J »

Hi All.

I’m slowly going thru my cellar sorting out what to send to auction and reorganise what I’m keeping.

So I thought I’d post some pictures while I’m doing it.

If you guys have any pictures you’d like to share I’d love to see them.

Cheers Con.

Con, can I come and live in your cellar?

Seriously, some serious wines. Hope it's not too much of a wrench to dispose of them. Ever thought of offering them privately first, to avoid buyer and seller fees?

cheers, Malcolm

I would have to agree. I last had the 1979 in 2000, and the empty is still in my Wall of Fame.
Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.

Bit nervous showing my collection. The other day in California someone drilled through a roof at a wine shop and took off with their best.

Nice wines Con. Most truly age-worthy so no need to sell. You’d probably get more money overseas for them than our market?

Yep...same thing happened to a retailer who had a wine shop for years on the King William Rd bend Hyde Park in Adelaide. Two sheets of galv jemmied and a host of Grange's from the 50s/60s gone. Sold the business shortly afterwards.
I have a lot of bottles but none would be considered 'porn'.

Unfortunately most of these will be sent off to auction very soon.

I’d love to look at all these in verticals and horizontals but I have to look at the $$$ that I can get.

I will keep a few but it’s deciding which is the hard bit.

Here’s a couple more pictures.

They make great verticals. Did most of them in Hong Kong where there’s plenty of interest in doing those types of events. It’s a shame they aren’t more popular down this way.

Hope you get a great price.

Yeah I remember you’re great write ups Jamie on the Winstar forum. Actually those write ups were some the inspiration for me collecting a lot of verticals.

There’s still a chance the Pewsey Vale is corked, there’s a cork under the screw cap.

Cheers Con.

Does anyone know the logic behind the screw-cap and a cork Bottles ? I have a few Ports with the same construction and it really makes no sense.

I understood it to be a 'belt and braces' approach, but one which risks being the worst of both worlds. That said, for a product like Port, expected to be cellared for many decades, perhaps the logic holds up a little better?

Were the wrong bottles on the wrong bottling lines, or that cork and screw cap closures were mixed up and came out of the same hopper??
Maybe part of this was done before machines took over?

Great bottles there, Con! Out of interest, which auction house will you be using? I'm thinking of sending some bottles off too.

No, because you needed a screw top bottle - larger bore and therefore bigger cork.
When these screw off closures first came out, they were promoted as being pilfer-proof and were more of a capsule dressing for the cork inside.

Tell you what guys, it was a lot easier deciding with the younger vintages to pull the trigger.

Here’s a few more photos that could have ended up bad.

That HJ bottle looks great. His tasting powers would have been near the peak at that time and imagine it will be a great bottle - very interesting to compare to the normal 75
