So how about Verdelho ?

Should have started this thread in Spring, but I had not been to Perth then. On a quick weekend break in Nov I did try a couple of really nice Verdelho wines. I've had some top Spanish versions ( Ossian being the best) which can be oaked or unoaked, but the 2 unaoked versions I tried from Talijanchic and Kosovich in the Swan Valley really perked my intertest. Lovely fresh linear wines, with plenty of acidity, mouth puckering citrus and a streak of Sancerre like fruit. Yum.

Question is of course, what are the other great Verdelhos out there ? Someone recommended David Traegar a few months ago, especially his older bottlings, and I believe Tyrrels make a good one. Any others and does anyone have any experience of aging these for 10+ years ?

Note that I am specifically talking about dry versions here.

Faber in swan valley do a really good one and it ages well too. Oldest I’ve tried is 10 years but it had more left in the tank.

Good choices. I would add Faber Vineyard to the mix. The Faber, along with Kosovich and Talijancich, are probably the top three Verdelho producers in the Swan Valley. The winjes also age superbly.

I was talking to someone over lunch in Feb and they did say that the Traeger Cellar Door was still open. The website still seems to be up and wine-searcher seems to list the wines, so I presume its safe to order.

Anyone know a merchant in Perth who stocks Faber, Kosovich and Talijancich ?

Both Bremerton and Bleasdale from langhorne creek produce nice examples of Verdelho.

I've had many vintages of the verdelho produced by Willespie in Margaret River. It's relatively simple acid and flavour packed as a young wine, and ages particularly well. I've drunk them at 15 or so years of age and they're pretty good.
Mount View Estate in the Hunter used to have a liqueur verdelho solera system running that was one of their better wines, but scarce.

Yes, it was, and a relatively big seller in Western Australia - but by no means the best Verdelho in W.A.
