June 2023 Purchases

Post by DaveS »

I’m opening this month with a bang

1 x Imperial bottle of 2012 Fraser Gallop Parterre Cab

I’ve been looking for a large format bottle or two for my newly built cellar and had almost bought other ones but not quite pulled the trigger for one reason or another. I went to the Fraser Gallop open day this weekend where they had a heap of back vintage stuff open and were pouring magnums and the odd Jeroboam, big pours etc. The generosity on display was endearing. And I’ve always liked the Fraser Gallop wine labels which is important for a large format wine that you’re planning on having on display. Plus the Parterre cab is one that I’ve bougnt often. So when they were selling Imperials at the open day of felt like the right opportunity. Might be one to open at my 50th (41 now).

I picked up the full allocation from Agricola today. 4 wines, all priced $56, with a max of 3 each. 2 new wines, including a Kalimna Sands from an 1864 planted vineyard.
This is my church, this is where I heal my hurts.

I decided to do the same, the first 2 vintages were good so I expect these to be also. I also picked up my allocation of Chatto Isle

Did the same as well ... pity the allocation was only 3 bottles of each ... but with less the 2,000 bottles made of each release you can understand why!

Grabbed some of the 22 Agricola releases too, the Flaxman & Kalimna.

Looking forward to some quality 2021 Wild Duck Creek Wines, particularly the Alan's Cabernet.

Might have to get on the Agricola train, half the price of Einestone and Standish, Could be a good counter to Sami Odi. Callum sent me an email a couple of weeks ago, maybe a mix six?

Meanwhile my Wynns contact at TWE has been laid off in the restructure, damn, yes not good for me, but worse for him, apparently 200 sacked, and a host of vineyards for sale according to my agri mate. Guess the US Snoop dogger, Chinese experiment is going sour

Did you get them direct Mike ?

Saw them on MW at the special price of $80. Only $55 on the mailing list and if the pricing stays sensible I will be buying my full allocation for the next few years at least.

Sean wrote: Thu Jun 29, 2023 9:13 am Craig, it might be the opposite of that. They get much better margins in Asia and USA than Australia.

It is all about what they call their “premiumisation strategy”.

Penfolds is their best earner by far. It leaves the other Australian wine brands for dead.

The last company announcement about this on 25 May was talking about targeting Treasury Premium Brands, ie. the Australian brands. They will be gearing up some of them including Wynns, Pepperjack, Squealing Pig and 19 Crimes to drive sales in their key global markets.

Others that don’t have that export potential will get cut. So we will see another round of winery closures and vineyard sales here I suppose. :(

Thinking about it a bit more, if they are worried about wine sales in this country (they probably aren’t anyway) they will realise what a big turn-off it is for us.

Those cheap wine brands they are marketing o/s will have a limited life.

Meanwhile we will stop buying the Treasury wine brands because they are just plonk churned out of a couple of mega tank farms in South Australia.

So there is a hard truth that in the same post you are more excited about names like Agricola, Einestone, Standish and Sami Odi instead.

The Treasury bean counters just don’t understand that.
Sean, wise words!
I wish to purchase 2-3 brands from the TWE portfolio for the 2021 vintage and then may get a few less in 2022. Then that it is it, hip hip hoo bloody ray!!!
My lad has expressed interest in taking over Wendouree, Rockford, Standish, Noon and Sami Odi. Potentially Eisentone, Eperosa in the mix too, plus a couple of niche Victorian labels.

I still support TWE largely through my love of Coonawarra, and that I have a couple (or did) contacts that can get me wines at a reasonable price. But yes that will cease soon, its a soulless beast geared to 5 year CEO cycles and shareholder returns.
A person I know who worked for them for 30 years didn't even get a thank you for service, in the termination email
