January 2023 Purchases
January 2023 Purchases
Well here's to another year!
Went to Rockford CD today. Just the tonic after feeling awful over the last few weeks, thankfully now in a good spot to catch up.
2019 releases from a an excellent but warm BV vintage looking really good
Rod&Spur lovely wine great balance 70/30 S/CS split.
Moppa GSM, cherry and mixed spice, nice wine
Rifle Range Cabernet long and linear with melting tannins, great expression of BV cab
BP, first vintage in many years on release that was plush and warm, without a hair out of place. Rich and long, great wine...like a cuddly blanket.
Staff think it will be an early developer due to a warmer vintage, but methinks it will do 20 years easily.
2022 Vine Vale, fabulous and got a case.
Other wines and fortifieds very good.
CC needs a rest now
6 BP
6 Rifle Range
Cheers Craig

They raved about the R&S in the newsletter. I have tried it twice at CD. The first time I was unimpressed, the second, it was better but preferred the Moppa (and bought some) each time.

Re: January 2023 Purchases
You blokes must have super-palates. The pourings so small I can barely discern Shiraz from Cabernet. Happy NY.
Re: January 2023 Purchases
Whilst it feels a little strange being in the BV in the first week of January, we were the only stonewallers booked in, so generous pours and had a second look at both BP and RR.
Might get more BP

Same for me Andrew.
Given my love for old wine, I find it amazing that I order all this young stuff, but I suppose I’m a lover of good wine first and old wine second.

Re: January 2023 Purchases
I picked up a few oddities
3 bottles of Vernaccia di Oristano Gold from the 70’s
2 bottles of Moscato di Trani Liquoroso, again from the 70’s
2 bottles of 1975 Trittenheimer Altärchen Riesling BA, Schnitzius-Müllers
2 half bottles 07 Dorsheimer Pittermännchen Riesling BA, Diel
3 bottles 1990 Winkeler Hasensprung Riesling Spätlese, Prinz von Hessen
Got to love these German names. Taking a chance on these as they are coming from Europe, but the weather should have cooled by the time they get here.
The Vernaccia is the weirdest wine I know of - tastes like a combination of Sherry and Vin Jaune.

Well done. Saw that deal this AM and also very tempted by it. The Jack Mann at <$80 a bottle seems a great deal too. Hmmm.Andrew Jordan wrote: ↑Fri Jan 13, 2023 2:59 pm x6 2019 Houghton Gladstones Cabernet - with discount and a voucher picked up for $33 per bottle!

Thanks anyways AJ but no I’m not.
Re: January 2023 Purchases
Picked up to bottles at auction tonight of the 13 Cri de Coer Savignin from Crittenden Estate - the first vintage of their Vin Jaune attempt.
Bought a couple of Brown Bothers 91 Cabernet, and from the mixed lots, 3 Bottles of 95 Wolf Blass Riesling (a wine I loved 25 years ago) and a couple of bottles of Granite Hills (a Cabernet and a sparkler).
No room for more, which was a shame as I really wanted to try the 99 Roxburgh Chardonnay, some 96 & 97 Petaluma Chardonnay and quite a few bottles of older reds from Lindemans.

Re: January 2023 Purchases
Picked up some wine for what feels like the 1st time in ages, and from an unlikely source given their elevated pricing. It was from Harvey Nichols abd the word is that this very genuine sale (plenty of half price wines) signals a re-appraisement of their wine offering, which I take it to mean "people weren't buying wines we'd over-priced"
Nothing especially fancy, but useful flesh to a cellar that's shrunk in the last 2-3 years.
2000 Les Pallieres Racines Gigondas
2019 Kilikanoon Mort's Block (x2)
Plus some halves
2018 Torbreck The Struie
2018 Wirra Wirra Church Block
2019 Trimbach Riesling (x2)
2018 Trimbach Pinot Blanc (x2)
plus some similarly reduced xmas style hamper 'fillers' from the food section, all for under £100.
They had Penfolds Bin 28 there for £17, which effectively puts it back at the relative cost that I used to buy it for a couple of decades ago. I thought about it for 0.68 seconds before reminding myself I never did enjoy the wines! Was more tempted by heavy reductions on La Bilancia, Eileen Hardy Chardonnay, but stuck with the above for what was an unplanned purchase.

Yes, from Wednesday auction: 1994 & 1998 Leasingham C.C. cab sauv, 1998 Leasingham C.C. Shiraz, 1996 Linderman St George, 2014 Toolangi Block F Chard, 1995, 1997 & 1999 Wynns Cab Sauv, and 2003 Ch Rieussec.
Opened a bottle of the 2019 Toolangi Block F Chard from the last auction and found that it's full of favour and drinking very well. This vintage will last another 10 years.
Cheers,
Alan
